Glueing Fold-down carpet
« on: January 01, 2014, 02:14:40 PM »
Anyone had difficulty with 3M 08090 holding the fold-down carpet? I read a couple posts indicating 08090 being used, and in addition, my auto body shop said this product was extremely strong adhesive. Luckily, I tested the process using a small scrap of the carpet. I applied the adhesive as the directions on the can specified (two coats sprayed in opposite directions to both pieces, wait 4 minutes, then stick pieces together). I then waited 30 minutes and unfortunately, found that I could very easily pull the carpet sample right off of the metal.
I'm looking for advice and/or perhaps I used the wrong product for this application? The carpet came from NPD and appears to have some sort of semi-clear (almost white) plastic-like backing that holds the carpet together.

In case it may someday help someone, I tested two more carpet samples:

(1) using the same 3M 08090 but this time I roughed up the back of the carpet with 80 grit sandpaper.

(2) I tried some 3M 38808, withOUT scuffing the carpet backing with sandpaper

I let both samples dry overnight

Carpet sample (1) adhered "OK". You could pull it off if you wanted to, but it's holding OK since the edges of the fold-down will be bound with the chrome trim.
Carpet sample (2) adhered much better, evening without scuffing the backing.

In short, I'm going to use 3M 38808 and scuff up the backing a little bit for some extra assurance.

Being that there is a trim molding that completely surrounds the carpet on the panels, what is your concern? I used the 3M spray on my 66 Fastback rear seat only to keep the edges from getting a "bubble" when the molding went on. It worked.

scuffing shouldn't matter, it doesnt bond that way. Are you letting glue dry completely (dry to touch) before contacting?

Have no idea of why its not working for you. Have used contact glue (both spray and brush on) for this for ever and never had a problem as long as the product was good, there was no dust or dirt on the surfaces and the two prepped surfaces were allowed to set up before being pressed/laid together.

IMHO the temp can play a part in how long the reactions will take but with everything being accounted for it should work fine.

May of the 3M spray adhesive we use for headliners can be putted away from the car months after they have been glued together but the hold is tight and steadfast. Maybe your looking for a permanent adhesive like the original verses a contact adhesive. The old brush on contact cement is most like IMHO what was used originally though they may have rolled or sprayed it on.
