Power Steering Pump - 68 GT500KR Auto
« on: December 31, 2013, 02:02:46 AM »
Happy New Year all ...

I was just reading an older post about a 1967 GT 350 power steering pump ...

The conclusion was that the HBA-BH was the correct pump which I believe is the correct one for the 68 big block as well. However, an interesting fact was about the reservoir can. The 67 can's low pressure nipple had a 90 degreeish bend towards the drivers apron. Would this be the same for the 68 KR? As well, I am having trouble figuring out the right pulley number is it a 6AA?

I believe I have the proper can but it is a bit beat up (a few smaller love taps on the back bottom) is there a good way to restore them or are they pretty much shot if banged up too much?

Thanks again

All 67-68 Shelby used the BH pump with 90 degree elbow. 6AA is correct IIRC for non ac

The truck pump selected for the Shelby application was due mainly because of the elbow orientation on that application pump. It was better for the lines running forward to the cooler. The can will come off of the pump assembly so you can get to the inside to metal finish the dents out.

Thanks Tim and Bob,

I have attached a picture of the back of my pump to confirm this is correct before I invest the money to have the can repaired/refinished.

Somehow it got an AG pulley ...

It is a non AC car.

Happy New Year and Thanks again

The can looks correct. There should be a metal ID tag secured under the can nut. That was on it when it was painted so it is the same can color. If you don't have the correct one then one from another application pump would be the next best substitute. Once installed it is hard to read the tag but at least there is one there that can be seen like it is supposed to be. The correct 6AA pulley is fairly common. If you can't find one I have a extra.

Thanks for the offer Bob, I found a good pulley this AM.

Where would you suggest I look for a tag - I guess any HBA-BF would be a good substitute assuming the BH's are extinct.

Blessings

Not extinct because they were used on truck applications too. As mentioned before a tag from another application (even some non Mustang )will work as a stand in and look the part as long as it is the same size . Once painted and because of where it is mounted it is very hard to read the stamping if you are looking to read and even more extremely so  to the casual viewer . Look at some pictures of what the tags look like in shape and size so you know what to hunt for.
