69 351W oil dipstick+tube question
« on: December 25, 2013, 09:06:42 AM »
Hi all,

i think my oil dipstick tube is shorter than it should be. It ends at the same height with the cylinder heads, not like it should be, the same height with the valve cover. The oil dipstick is 20.25" length (bottom of shield). with handle its 24" overall length. The timing chain cover is original.
Maybe someone can tell me whats wrong and which dipstick this is. It has no stamping on it, so its a repro, but for which car and what engine?
I put 5 quarts oil in the engine and the oil level is in the " safe" area of the dipstick. So it shows the right amount of oil.

Thank you

greets

Cristopher

I took a couple pictures of our original dipstick tube and handle. Metuchen, 2/24/69 built, '69 Mach1. You can see the lengths of 22" and 25.5" overall. Measure yours to compare.

someone may have put in a 302 dipstick (they are reproducing one for the 302 but not 351w).

my 351w tube length is ~13".

my 351w dipstick length is ~22"(not including handle).  the 302 is about 2 inches shorter.

Seems you might have a 302 setup.

Buckeyedemon says that they are about 2" shorter. See if someone will chime in and give you an exact length from their 302 dipstick.

It seems i have the 302 dipstick, because mine is 2" shorter. Now i need to know what the length the tube is in a 302 setup.

Thank you

When in doubt, read the book, in this case the 1972 Ford Car Parts sect 60.5 page 15 for the 302, and sect 60.6 page 13 for the 351W. The dipstick is shown as p/n C9OZ-6750-A for both applications. There are measurements: 20.37 shield to full; 21.05 shield to add; 22.80 shield to end. The tube (same pages) is different: 302 C9OZ-6754-B approx. 13 3/16 developed length; 351W C9OZ-6754-A approx. 13 11/16 long. The measurement criteria is up to you on the tube, I have no idea what they mean.

I thought the 302 dipstick tube is ~11" long. Mine looks like it is 2" shorter than the 351W tube,
like my dipstick.

I have no idea what the tube length is for a 302.

My timing cover is original and I replaced the dipstick (beat up end) with an original.

Maybe someone cut your tube in order to make it read correct with a shorter dipstick?
