68 GT 350 Questions
« on: December 24, 2013, 11:34:35 PM »
I am working on a December 2nd built GT 350 with a AT. Does any one have a picture or information on the correct fan clutch? The Shelby parts list call for a C7ZX-8A616-A and the Mannel book call out a E-C6OE-A. I found a F-C7SE-A but not sure what it was for.
The original air cleaner and oil cap are missing. The Shelby parts list call for a C5OE-6766-A oil cap. Was it a part of a closed system with a tube like the 500? A picture or information would be helpful.

I am not aware of Mannels book saying anything in regards to a 68 Shelby. The correct fan clutch for the 68 GT350 is in fact the C7ZX-A regardless if air or no air (GT500 gets C8ZX-A) .The breather cap is the closed style used on 65/66 GT350,67 GT350 (with smog) 68 GT350 and 69/70 GT350.Typically it will have FOMOCO in block letters in a rectangle.

Bob the Mannel book said that the only 68 Ford using a fan clutch was the 68 Cougar and it used a E-C6OE-A clutch. I guess he was not thinking of the Shelby's. I thought it was odd that in the Mannel book under 67 it said that the Mustang and Cougar used a E-C7ZE-B then in 68 a E-C6OE-A was used. I do not know if I will ever find a C8ZX-A, are there any good substitutes? I PMed you about the Air cleaner.

Bob's book is a excellent resource and I use it often but it is a work in process as Bob will tell you. I have noticed the absence of the Shelby reference. Technically he is not wrong because he is not mentioning Shelby at all.  He may not be aware of the 67 /68 Shelby difference or at least wasn't at the time of the books first printing.  I have never discussed it with him. There are various fan clutch substitutes, some better then others. This is a little confusing but the closest substitute in physical appearance would be a 67 Mustang 390 fan clutch.  The C7ZX -A is sourced from the 67 GT500 .  It has a shorter shaft like the 390 fan clutch.  The C6OE or C7ZE-B have a longer shaft. The appearance is easily noticeable if someone knows what they are looking at.  There are internal differences on the ZX clutch that is why the different engineering number from a regular Mustang but I have never been able to pin down exactly what they are.

Ironically I was in NC about 2 months ago and outside the shop I was visiting was about as rusty of a 68 350 as you can find. Low and behold I opened the hood and there was the original C7ZXA clutch. I asked owner if he wanted to sell it and he said make me an offer. I think he was expecting 20-30 bucks and almost fell over when I offered what I did (cant remember but it was either 3 or 4 hundred) H e gladly took it and I took it home and called a friend of mine who has been looking for one for years. Being a good friend and probably a fool I sold it for a hundred more than I paid.
I havent even seen one for sale for probably 3 years. My guess is if I listed that on Ebay it would have gone 1500-2000 as it fits 67 500 like Bob mentioned.
By the way if you dont buy Bobs I probably have an air cleaner and suitable element as well
