1968 HiPo 289 Mustang? Ford did make the Fuel Pump
« on: December 21, 2013, 07:34:05 PM »
Other than service parts, we all know there was no HiPo 289 engine for 1968. But based on a fuel pump I stumbled on a few weeks ago, it appears to me Ford initially had some plans to produce it for the Mustang. Thought I'd share a few photos on some of the forums since it is so unique. This thread is also posted on the HiPo and SAAC Forums...

The pump is Ford part number C8ZZ-9350-A, Carter number 4543S. It has dual springs and appears to be exactly like the 66-67 HiPo C6ZZ-9350-A, Carter 4201S unit, with one exception...it has the larger 3/8" inlet. I could not find either the Ford or Carter numbers in any of my references. Fortunately, both Tim Lea and Bob Mannel have copies of the 1968 specific Ford MPC which so far is the only reference that lists the 4543S. Thank you to Tim and Bob for identifying this thing! Below is a copy of the listing from Tim's 68 MPC, as you can see it shows the application as "F Special (with 4/B carb.)...8...289", a car that was never built. The assumption is with the car on the drawing board Ford had to develop this pump to accommodate the larger 3/8" fuel line for 1968 since the 4201S had a smaller 5/16" inlet.

If anyone else has information on this pump or Ford's plans to build a HiPo 289 Mustang in 1968 please share them...

Thanks,
Dave

I have had a couple rebuilds over the years but never figured out what they were for. I thought that they had the second spring installed by mistake by the rebuilder. Interesting to find out that they in fact were by design.

I agree, the box is weird, as well as the label that indicates it is a Ford rebuild part. Not sure how to explain that because I see no evidence whatsoever this has ever been bolted to an engine or disassembled/reassembled, IMO is is clearly an NOS part.

Yes - that is what I was referring to - that the box was the one I've seen used for the "factory" rebuilds)  as well as the ink stamping that supported that also.

Have seen other rebuilts that looked like they were never used either so not sure if that is a strong clue

Thanks for  sharing - another one of those parts that Ford made with no car to put them on ;)   Sort of like all the 71 Boss 302 parts and the like

I guess most factory rebuilds I've seen have some clue that identify it as a rebuild...mounting flange bolt/washer marks, hard to read stamped numbers due to bead blasting or similar, drilled out arm pin, crimp/uncrimp marks, etc.  This pump has nothing like that, as you can see from the photos the Carter number stamp looks as clear as day one. Plus, what would this have been bolted on? Is it possible it was stamped as a rebuild after sitting for a while as some sort of warranty issue? It still has the factory reddish grease for the arm pivots, don't remember seeing that on factory rebuilds, only NOS pumps, but I have not seen that many rebuilds up close.

One thing I forgot to mention is the date code stamp, 22A9A, so long after any 68 HiPo 289 plans were scrapped. I discussed this with Bob Mannel and he said once a pump was in Carter's system they would continue to build a few service parts until told to stop. He also said Ford may have kept a few around for racers that wanted or needed a high RPM mechanical option that worked with the 3/8" fuel line.

The Ford remanufacturers received new parts from Ford until a core supply could be established. My local one, GPD (Genuine Parts Distributors) in Los Angeles was our local remanufacturer. Generally if they had a new part in a rebuilt box they would put a green pen stripe on the label. That way they would know new from rebuilt without opening the box. We would call them and ask for a green stripe box if we were looking for a new part. The price was still at a rebuilt price plus a core charge and we would get the core charge back if we turned in a core. One exception to this practice was on clutches and pressure plates. Ford did not sell new ones but only as rebuilt. In the case of Hipo 289 clutch and pressure plates, they were always marked as rebuilt, but as far as I know, they were always new. All clutches and pressure plates from Ford came in the brown Ford box labeled as rebuilt and not the local remanufacturers box. Fuel pumps were sold as new parts in Ford not remanufacturers boxes through the Ford parts distribution centers. Based on my explanation above you can understand why that pump in question would have for sure been new even in the rebuilt box.

Fred,

Thanks for the info. Thanks also for your help when I was trying to identify this pump!

Bought a parts lot for $5.99 a few weeks ago of Ford patches, nameplate off a Taurus SEL, a glow plug, etc.  Looked through it tonight and found a 1968 Autolite / Ford "Ready Reference Catalog Parts and Accessories". Looked under fuel pumps and found it listed here as well.
