1966 Teal Power Steering Ford Pump
« on: December 18, 2013, 06:06:58 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have an original Thompson pump that was teal in colour. There was only very little paint left on it and as I am repainting it I was wondering:

a) If the canister and cast pump housing were painted as one or separate? Looked to be separate as there was no paint in the groove that is created where they meet but unsure.

b) What the finish should be on the tag and nuts? If they were painted were they already attached or separate?

I read that some vaseline is used to lube the o-ring prior to assembly. Any suggestions? (Keep it clean!)  ;D

Thanks in advance

Daniel.

The pump with pump (minus the cap) would have been painted as a unit with a mask over the snout so the paint would not get in the way of installing the pulley. ID tag and first thin retaining nut was in place also.

I often put a thin coat of natural metal over the rear of the reservoir so that it doesn't runs where the shadow is produced behind the tag ;)

DANIEL.

Something to get you thinking........

I have a unrestored 66 NJ car that is 22L build date with a black power steer pump and have seen another unrestored (now restored incorrectly)Australian NJ car that has a 02M build date coupe that was also had a black pump.  not saying NJ cars came only with black pumps. I personally believe all factories have both black and teal pumps available through the years ==== just my recent observations. all my recent NJ car have been manual steer applications. may need to buy some more cars!!!!!!!!!!
