Oct 64 San Jose markings - firewall foward
« on: December 16, 2013, 09:55:42 PM »
I've searched other threads and know of factory markings (markel stick marks) on the following locations on the front end, firewall forward, Oct 64 SJ K-code Fastback:

- "K"'s and interior / exterior colors on front of radiator support
- fender #s on outside of left & right frame rails
- "X" by steering box bolts
- "X" by idler arm brace (didn't find)
- green spot on idler arm brace
- coil spring markings (once I soak them in evaporust)
- other suspension piece markings, although a lot of pieces are aftermarket
- spots on steering box under blackout - looks like red & blue so far

Any other places I should look (firewall forward)?  Don't want to lose any.

For your car and plant!!! (for others viewing ;)

Oct 64 SJ K-code Fastback:

- "K"'s and interior / exterior colors on front of radiator support -
Not always (shopping list of colors) . K's and likely another letter on the front cross member. OF course the list colrs would be under the black and not really that visible on a restored car ;)

- fender #s on outside of left & right frame rails -
Yes - typically three numbers (only certain ones were used) followed by two and divided with a dash. Other side two digits followed but three numbers

- "X" by steering box bolts -
Typically yes - some times it comes out as a check mark when the guy was quick or didn't want to bend over that day

- "X" by idler arm brace (didn't find) -
Would not expect that you would have ;)

- green spot on idler arm brace - More often I've found a stripe - yours might have bene done a little quicker or incomplete compared to most.

- coil spring markings (once I soak them in evaporust) - Yes

- other suspension piece markings
, although a lot of pieces are aftermarket

- spots on steering box under blackout
- looks like red & blue so far

Any other places I should look (firewall forward)?  Don't want to lose any.

- Radiator support - white thin drivers side number over black

- Battery box/inner fender on wheel side

- On very few examples (must have been a fill in guy that worked the spot once a month or so)  drivers side shock tower pocket (wheel side) or drivers side splash shield.

- Center of the firewall towards top

- Sheet metal
- Headlight buckets behind painted ring.
- Front fenders - on lip where it bolts to the car.
- Passenger side cowl below the weather strip
- Hood - upper corners when hood is open. Two different unassociated items

Think that does it

- Battery box/inner fender on wheel side

Found what looks to be a white X about 5" tall.  It was very faded.  Is that correct?

Didn't find either of these, but may have missed due to the paint stripping and/or undercoating removal.

Found these in yellow.

Found this a while back, my rotation number, as well as the Interior / Exterior codes in yellow under the black.

Correct is an odd IMHO word to use. You find what you find - its either as expected (seen many times before) or its something new, something done after the factory its only part of a larger mark and we're only finding part of what was there.

With that said I'm guessing, based on seeing ALLOT of these, that you found part of the original mark and the rest is disappeared or was covered by sound deadener. If you want to email me directly we can discuss what it might have been original and offer some examples

Good that was a test ;) on one the other is not seen often so didn't expect you to find it

Good - there just about 99% of the time and then there was the fill in guy :(

Great as expected of course the interior/exterior coding would have been  hidden when the car was new. Though a few restorers apply these over the black :( Hopefully the judges are deducting for this ;)
