Spiral wrap on return power steering hose (302 motor)
« on: December 11, 2013, 11:51:03 AM »
Having problems getting power steering hoses for a "J" code built April 03, 68 in San Jose.  Purchased the Blue Dot hoses but they are the "under the motor mount type" and will not begin to work on our car.  Contacted them but appears they do not make the proper hoses for the "over" the motor mount configuration.  The hoses were very nice but sadly they just cannot work.  Both pressure and return had the spiral wrap, which leads to the question:  Does the return hose on the "over" the motor mount configuration have a spiral wrapped protector? The pressure hose sold by Virginia Mustang comes with the spiral wrap, but not the return hose.  The car in question also has air conditioning if that would make a difference. The hoses original to the car are long gone and cannot provide a clue, so have hope that someone here can help out on this.  Any images would be appreciated as well.  Thanks!

Yes the pressure hose had the wrap it appears on the originals, don't recall ever seeing on on the return low pressure hose but we'll see what others have experienced. Can understand the other hose especially the pressure side) not fitting Ford made that one very long for the application given the large loop it made at the pump

The spiral wrap is near the rear solid end  of the pressure hose  - not really visible from the engine compartment with any ease.

The engine end of the pressure hose - I've seen the extra foam outer jacket many times though it didn't hold up well on the original cars of any year

Figured you didn't need a bunch of PS hose loops from the top side so here is a couple of shots from the bottom side. Easy to see that the one owner routed his incorrectly after they were removed/replaced at one point though it does show the spiral wrap detail

Also as s note - one car was built before your car the other after (between 8R01J134461 and 8R02J167) so your car was just about in the middle between both of these  Hope this helps

Thanks Dudley - much prettier. The white rubber strap is unusual - the black ones (like your front one) are much more common. Must have been a marking stripe or something on the belt material the supplier cut these from

Jeff, -- John noticed two things : 1) that the return hose fitting has black paint, and 2) that there is what appears to be blue dye on the return hose at the bracket. I had spotted the black, but not the blue. Is the blue for alignment purposes of the hose to the bracket. I will take a closer look at the car itself to verify that it is blue and not something with the lighting I used ( I used that fluorescent bulb again that creates different hues, though normally yellowish). The rubber on the tailpipe hanger on the car is mostly white if anyway remotely related.

Believe that is the pressure (attaches to the center of the pump) but that doesn't matter in this discussion. Really odd - haven't seen that on any other original car no matter the plant that I can recall. Only on the side away from the shock tower and travels up the hose for a good 6"  Can't remember the history of the car (sorry :(  wonder if it cam later

and 2) that there is what appears to be blue dye on the return hose at the bracket. I had spotted the black, but not the blue. Is the blue for alignment purposes of the hose to the bracket. .......

Based on the location of the "blue" it appears that either its a location mark or a reaction between the rubbers. We see a a locator mark often on rear end vent hoses but the odd thing is that we don't see a similar mark on other original PS hoses in that location that I recall (maybe someone else has)

Another detail to look for and see if we can confirm with other cars.

Jeff the white rubber strip is probably from a white wall tire sidewall as I see them show up on many exhaust hangers from that era they had wide whitewall tires.

I've replaced a pair of 65-66 exhaust hanger like that about 20 years ago. I initially thought they were a bad knock off item, but the second set changed my mind. Both sets were refurbished, one set was installed and the second is allocated for another 66 GT I have.

So like me you've not seen the white in this application before either. Yes I've seen the white in exhaust brackets but not on a San Jose PS hose strap prior ;)   Come to think of it haven't seen the white in the 65-66 shock tower support rubber straps either (most likely the same provider as the straps we're discussing)

I've removed a white strap from another SJ car. It's pictured in this thread.

Thanks Danny for remembering that earlier thread - seems that I had forgotten it. Looks like (given the time period and plant ) that strap might even be from the same batch. Just of the heck of it (no reason for it to be just asking :) was it attached at the same spot as the one on Dudley's car

Has anyone found a source for the round headed metal retaining pin that holds these rubber straps to the side of the engine compartment.  Metal round head about the size of a thumb tack and serves as a cap for two arrow shaped legs that push through a hole and do not want to come out very easy.  Are some a push pin type plastic retainer as some have mentioned or were those just a replacement for the metal retainers?  Have one that is a peg leg with one tang broken.

John, looking at the examples in all of my pictures, the plastic ones were used in 67 (at least San Jose - checked there since were discussing San Jose cars) - not sure if the change happened at the year change or if they were carried into early 68 production also. More to look for ;)

Thanks, Marty.  I can't imagine you found this part - never would have suspected it still could be obtained.  How did you manage to locate a vendor.  Checked with NPD because they also sell Camaro parts and they have one something like what AMK lists, but I cannot be certain.  Will probably just order some on my next order and see if they are like those from AMK.  The supplier to NPD for these push retainers is classic industries rather than AMK so who knows.
