1967 brushed aluminum dash trim
« on: December 07, 2013, 12:33:16 PM »
I am looking to purchase reproduction brushed aluminum for the dash of my deluxe interior 67 mustang.  I see that their is 3 suppliers (Burton, JME, and Scott Drake) for these parts.  Does anyone have any experience with which one is the closest to the original?  I am building a concourse driven car and want to get it as close as possible.  Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you,
John

I like Burton. FYI Burton is the only one that has both the early and the late door panel aluminum variations.

Thank you for the feedback.  Bob, I was not aware their was an early and late version of the door trim.  I see Burton offers door trim with and without the mirror hole, it this the difference?
Thanks

No, there is a difference in the forward edge where one is sharper edge and other has been blunted by the shape of the metal. Not sure when the change happened but best guess is around dec 66.

Would anyone happen to have pictures of the 2 different styles?  I have my original pieces, but they are scratched badly where the door handle is at.  I will dig them out and post a picture.
Thanks

Thank you Jeff.  See attached picture but I seem to have the later design.  My car was built on Dec 17,1966 at the San Jose plant if this help determine when the switch was made.  Once again, thanks to all that jumped in.

I hate to disparage parts suppliers, but I was very disappointed in the Burton Deluxe Dash kit I bought (and returned).  For example, on the instrument bezel, it looked like they simply took a standard camera case bezel, and then glued a piece of brushed aluminum over it - which made the openings for the high-beam and turn signal indicators incorrect - see attached image...

I also thought the color of the brushed aluminum on the Burton pieces looked a little too dark - almost more of a nickel color than aluminum...

I eventually went with the Scott Drake pieces because they did the high-beam and turn signal indicator openings correctly.  However, they also had their problems too - I had to return the first kit I bought due to sloppy workmanship (misalinged aluminum pieces, scratched "chrome", and excess glue coming out under some of the edges), and the "WIPER" and "BRAKES" lettering is actually etched into the metal - rather than screened-on as the originals were - but I decided I could live with that...

Not sure if the JME stuff is any better or worse, but be prepared to return a few sets of whichever supplier you choose until you get a set that looks acceptable...

Good Luck!

Those on our 67 GTA were Burton's and they were perfect. That was 2008 and I think Mort Burton passed away in the last two years so things may have changed there. I used the original bezel and our car is a early car. I am not sure if there is any difference.

Marty ,I am not aware of a early late difference with the bezel. The stuff I have always gotten was spot on . Maybe I was lucky . I had a little wait to get some of the later door panel pieces( about 6 months) last year and thought I was corresponding with The older gentleman Burton who founded and came out with the deluxe pieces. I hope he hasn't past.

Thanks for the additional info guys.  I wish I had gotten one of the "good ones" from Burton right off the bat - would have saved me a lot of trouble!

Regarding the early vs. late Deluxe Door Panel inserts, looks like my car had the late version too - which means that the early ones must have been very early, as my car was built in Sept. 1966, and was one of the first 11,000 cars built in San Jose for the '67 model year...

I checked our originals from the SJ 11-04-66 and it used the late style as well.
