Correct clamps for 65 A/C
« on: December 04, 2013, 05:22:15 PM »
Which clamp is the correct version to use for attaching the a/c hose to the shock tower? There are two types I've seen used, both are shown in the attached pictures.

Also, for the clamp used to hold the suction and discharge hose under the engine compartment brace (picture attached), where can I find one of these? I'm pretty sure they are not reproduced.

Thanks.

I will rush in and say something stupid before the experts arrive, but I think the correct clamp is a rubber dipped style (like your second pic), and a truly correct one is not available as repro IMO.  I also think the correct fastener for the cowl brace mounted support loop is a hex head screw, not Phillips head as shown.

The second one is correct i believe as well.  Also the bracket that holds the hoses to the cowl brace is not available anywhere and is held on with a hex screw.  Here is a pic of my engine bay:

Donor car or make one from a pattern if someone has one out of the car for a pattern ;)

Thanks everyone. Is the shock tower clamp reproduced? I don't think I've seen this type from the major suppliers.

The clamp for a 65 V8 according to the 65 Electrical assembly manual is p/n 357949-S. It is shown in the Ford Standard and Utility Parts Catalog, January 1965, on page 37. The dimensions are: 21/32W, 1 3/64L, 27/64 Loop, Beveled end, w/mtg hole, rubber coated. Its only Mustang application is 1965. AMK does not carry it.
The mounting screw is: 42119-S8 hex, tapping 8-18X3/8L, flange 11/32, 1/4hex drive. It is the same one used to hold the heater plenum to the heater.

Thanks. I'll have to scrounge around at used parts places to see if I can pick these two clamps up, neither is repoduced. Classic Auto Air does not have any spares either.

I spotted the Shock Tower Clamps in the 2013 NPD Catalog, page 201, part 353473-S. They appear to be the dipped type and NPD claims it to be the 'Correct Style' for 65-66. I don't know enough about the clamp to have an opinion about its correctness but may be worth checking into.

Right, NPD carries the clamp in the first picture above, the type with the metal band in the center. The consensus was that this type is not the correct version...so I'll have to track the correct one down at a used parts shop.

So NPD carries the shock tower clamp for the Sight Glass Hose. With Jim's input on the bolt to fastner it to the shock tower, I should be set for that one: "The mounting screw is: 42119-S8 hex, tapping 8-18X3/8L, flange 11/32, 1/4hex drive. It is the same one used to hold the heater plenum to the heater".

Now the bracket that surrounds both Suction and Sight Glass Hoses at the cowl brace...I'll need some help with this one. I checked all used parts suppliers and can't find one. If anyone has a spare, I'll be glad to purchase it.

Thanks for the help.

I don't have one but was at a Swap Meet recently where I saw one in a box of jumbled hardware; stupid me, forgot to bring cash. It wasn't in the best of shape but good enough that I could duplicate it. Another Swap Meet is coming up next weekend, I'll look for the Vendor and search again. I'll let you know if I find anything.

I'll have to see if I can post some measurements of the clamp I have and post them

ChrisV289,

If you can post something, that would be great. I just got back from the swap meet, found the same vendor but he did not have the bracket.

Thanks
