1968 GT 500 KR Rear Brake Lines
« on: December 04, 2013, 01:31:57 AM »
Hi, I have searched the website for this but didn't find any info ... but I recall reading somewhere that the rear brake cylinders on the 1968 KR were the same units on both sides (C7ZZ 2262 which is the left one in the general mustang parts books). Is this true? I have two of these but then the next question is where to source a good set of rear brake lines that would fit and that are cosmetically correct? My originals are pretty dirty and stained especially the wire wrap guards. Baring sourcing some new or NOS lines, is there a way to restore the originals to reuse? Otherwise, they are not bent or damaged.

Thanks for all your help.

all 68 shelbys use the C7ZZ A cylinders on both sides.
no real way to restore brake lines but reproductions are decent. confusion comes the way catalogs list the lines because most use 28 spline line sets even though all have 31 spline axles. is your car a 4 spd or auto?

Automatics use the 28 spline brake line set with the C7ZZ 28 spline brake hose

Would that be true on a automatic 68 GT 350 as well?

Yes. All 68 Shelbys are the same 28 spline line/hose set (even though they are 31 spline) except KR 4spd which uses the 31 spline set

Not really confusing the 68 1/2s & KRs with 4-speed have rear staggered shocks & vent hose is moved to outside more & brake hose moved inside more having 2 separate holes for exhaust pipe clearance around staggered shock mount & special brake hose & brake line bends routing different.

The author has a Automatic not a four speed  .

Ok I guess I am a little slow. What is confusing to me is if all 68 Shelby's are 31 splines why do they use the 28 spline line and hose sets?

dwdshelby,
I am reproducing the correct single crimp brake hoses. I have both the C7 rear & the C8 rear hose. For your car being a 4 speed it will use the C8 hose. For the fronts I only have the hoses for disc brake cars at the moment. I also have the correct 1/4" small bleeder wheel cylinder for your car. All my contact info is in my signiture below. You can check out the hoses on my website listed below as well.
Let me know if I can help.
Thanks,
David

Its really not confusing, its the way the vendors advertise. 28 or 31 spline has nothing to do with the brake lines but thats the way they advertise them. It should be sold as,

1. 68 Mustang/Shelby 9" rear axle brake lines, all except 428 CJ/KR 4 spd
2. 68 Mustang/Shelby 9" rear axle brake lines 428 CJ/KR 4 spd
Like Ed said its the relocated axle vent of the staggered shock not the spline

David, his is an auto which uses the C7

To anyone who doesnt know David, he makes some much needed very high quality reproduction parts and is a pleasure to deal with. In addition to the hoses and wheel cylinders he also makes beautiful strut rod bushings, rear axle line straps and many Boss 302/Boss 9 parts.

+1 on davids parts & he was at shop recently getting brake hoses for early cars he is working on making CONCOURS correct also.  I forgot (in my post) the rear brake line to brake hose strap holder being different (longer) on 68 1/2''  4-speed cars right TIM?
