66 washers on water pump
« on: December 03, 2013, 02:44:52 AM »
Hi all,
There are two thick washers on my 66 water pump and my mechanic can not remember which bolts they should go on. He's completing assembly on Thursday for paint so any help here would be great.

Thanks,

Dan.

Hi Dan

Do you have any photos of the washers to assist everyone with your question.

If you look closely you can see one that is to the right (clockwise) of the fuel line bracket on this 56 mile car. Just wondering where the other one goes now.

Thanks,

Dan.

The upper washer is as you determined, the lower washer goes on the place bolt just above the timing mark. It is there but barely visible. For reference, there are two other bolts shown in the picture between the upper and lower bolts that get the washers.

Thanks Jim,
In my research today I had just found out that these washers act as a spacer for non power steering cars. This avoids the need for different length bolts. The two positions mentioned are where the ps bracket would mount and according to the AMK sheet that comes with the bolt kit, the washers should be omitted for a ps installation.
Thanks for your help.

Now that is some interesting and little known stuff.  Looking at my manual steering car the pump seems to have eleven bolts with washers.  Brian

Hi Brian,
According to the AMK sheet the 3 top bolts and 2 inner bolts are a slotted hex head and have spring washers and the 4 bottom bolts are a flanged head. This is for a 66 no AC with PS car. (Cast pump) Hope this helps.
