Identifying FW holes
« on: November 21, 2013, 02:51:34 PM »
Anyone know what these firewall holes are for?  The first two pictures just look like extra holes for alternate items.  The hole in the 3rd pic looks like it could be for a cable or wire.

Pic 1, I don't know.
Pic 2, I was told by a Shelby owner that those were for 6 cylinder accelerator use, but why was that they were punched/drilled because the firewall was a "generic" multiuse piece of sheet metal.
Pic3, windshield washer.

Hi there,

Picture #1

Those 3 holes are used to secure the bracket the holds the accelerator linkage place (see my picture #1 for an example).

Picture #2

I'm am not aware what the 2 holes / dimples are used for in picture #2.  They are not punched out in my '65 GT.

Picture #3

+1 to what Jim indicated.  That hole is for the windshield wash pump wire (an ~4" piece of wire (with a rubber grommet) from the wiring harness ends in a female connector).  See my picture #2.

Regards,

Ron

Picture #!

The three holes high lighted - lower two are added.  Upper right one is for the six cylinder throttle linkage

Picture #2
The two center (of firewall) holes are for mounting the center support of the 6 cylinder throttle linkage to the firewall

The above three holes would be present on V8 cars also during your cars time period and plant, so I would suggest you don't fill them as they are visible after the car is together  ;)

Unlike the most interesting man in the world, my 2 cents is not worth 37 dollars and some change but here you go. This is the firewall of my 'restoration in progress 6-Cylinder '65 Coupe'. The holes circled in Black are where my Accelerator Linkage is mounted; the Red circles are where the 8-Cylinder Linkage would be mounted.  The bottom Red on mine is punched out for some reason...someone goofed I guess.

Is your a 65 San Jose car also??

Why assume someone messed up?   Depending on the time period multiple holes were prepunched in other periods they were just dimpled.

Thanks everyone for the information.

Guess I messed up.  I went back and looked and there are only 5 holes.  Ray, they are just like yours.  I took a better picture.  Mine is a V8, so I circled the accelerator mount screws in red.  The other two circled in black are for  the I-6 accelerator mount like you indicated.  All of mine are completely through, not dimpled.

Jeff, is this what you'd expect for my Oct 64 SJ car?

Thanks,
Rich

Yes for your time period and plant it appears from the samples I have that it was typical to find these holes like you have them (open not just dimpled) Have seen them covered/filled with chalking/dum-dum but would have to look at the pictures again to see if that was done during your cars period

Apparently San Jose used calking, as in strip calk, to plug the holes.

Jeff, my car was built in Dearborn mid-January, 1965...the firewall has eleven dimples; ten intact and the one that is punched through.

Rich, I have a question but that will change the string, so I'll ask by sending a personal message. Thanks for your post and photos, they have provided information that will help me in other areas.

Just another example why one sure look to cars built at the same plant and time for details during a restoration ;)

Next mystery....found 3 more dimples at the top of the FW, circled in red.  I noticed my FW pad had 3 corresponding cut outs that weren't removed.  Any idea what options, etc they would have been for?

Same car, Oct 64 SJ.

Thanks,
Rich

Thanks Jim.  My car already has a choke cable hole though (for Hipo's).  Is this for a different choke setup?

Correct my last to: air conditioning power, AT, convertible. You choke location is correct, or at least in the same spot as mine.
