1966 289 Water Pump Bolts Paint
« on: November 17, 2013, 01:17:01 AM »
What is the appropriate finish for the two water pump bolts that secure the upper alternator bracket to the water pump, painted engine color or unpainted?  Also, what is the proper finish for bolt that attached the lower alternator adjusting bracket to the water pump, painted engine color or unpainted?  1966 289, San Jose, October, 1965.

The upper two bolts to the fixed bracket are engine color, although they might have a scratch or two from installation. They were installed as part of the water pump installation at engine assembly, removed for the bracket and reused for the bracket. The lower bolt, 43000-S8 3/8-16X1 1/4 hex place, to the adjustable arm is clear zinc, and is the same as the adjustable bolt at the alternator. The washer, 352981-S8 3/8FLW, 0.406ID, 1.00OD, 0.125thk, at the alternator is also clear zinc plated.

Would this be the same for these bolts on an Oct 64 SJ car?  Aluminium water pump and associated timing cover.  Black instead of blue engine color of course.

The upper bolt, 42966-S8, is also a place bolt but is unique to 65 V-8 alternators, the lower bolt, 300958-S8, is common for almost all small block V-8 alternators without A/C, the two for the adjustable arm are the same as 66, 43000-S8.
