rear exhaust clamps
« on: October 07, 2013, 09:32:08 PM »
1970 Mach1 428CJ 4-speed  Dearbon 9/69. I attended the recent MCA Grand National Show in Orlando. Pictured below at the rear exhaust clamps , i was deducted points saying they should be reversed. i have never used a band clamp to tighted 2 exhaust pieces together, used only for the hangers ,as the clamps dont tighted down like a regular exhaust clamp.  Looking to confirm with a survivior car  correct placement  . All parts books i have used show clamps the way i have them. thanks for all replies  Saccman

I think the band clamp is OK but there shouldn't be a U-clamp at all - the tips were welded to the pipe.  My opinion - I'm not a judge.

The clamp you have on the chrome tip should be welded. The tailpipe clamp looks correct to me.

if it comes to having to weld the exhaust tips on, is that a full weld around the tips base  or just tacked on , like a spot weld on each side ?  thanks for the comments

Looking at the  1970 Chassis assembly manual, page 66,67,  View Z (R side), and View Y (L side),  shows the screws  on the band clamps installed from the inside, and this pointing towards the outside of the car. Opposite of what is shown in the pictures above.

I also noticed that in the drawing, that the  tab on the bottom of the hanger (the one that the band clamp pulls the pipe to), on the RS faces back and LS faces forward. I can see in your picture that the RS faces forward.

I am not sure if this was the actual practice, but that is what is shown. Perhaps some original cars can confirm this.

Also the weld is completely around the tip pipe.

Saccman,

The problem identified by the MCA judging is that your band clamps to the exhaust hangers are installed with the bolts pointing towards the gas tank. This is what is incorrect not the band clamps versus horseshoe clamps.

Think about it a minute, do you want something like the sharp, pointed tip of a bolt pointing towards the gas tank? A collision could easily result in a ruptured gas tank!!

Flip the band clamps so that the pointed end of the bolts go away from the gas tank and your issue will be resolved.

Pete Morgan

70 cj mach 1 had a short pipe with chrome tip on 1 side & a long pipe with chrome tip welded on the LH side if I remember correctly & they are both clamped on with fomoco saddle clamps so assembly line guy could adjust tip to fit valance panel hole for correct alignment.  The long pipe with tip was bent a certain way for clearance around gas tank since it is offset to the drivers side & if you look at 70 boss rear exhaust pipes they are bent different on both sides for the same reason & look at 70 rear hangers as lh side is shorter than rh
