1964 1/2 windshield question
« on: October 02, 2013, 10:58:59 PM »
Hi all. I am going to start looking for a good used or possibly new windshield for my 64 mustang. The original was already previously replaced and the replacement was no longer good due to a crack. The other windows match having a 4e date ( my car is a June build) but they also say SunX AS2. Does anyone know what this means? They have kind of a green tint to them and do not really look clear like in my other mustangs. Also, did the windshields in the early Mustangs have the dark band at the top for sun/shade protection? Since I am unsure of what the original car had i do not know whether to find a nice original or new one with the dark band at the top. Anyone have any comments on how the new windshields fit? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hi again. I have also seen a replacement windshield in the NPD Mustang catalog that states to have the blueish tint across the top or is green correct for a 64 1/2? Has anyone purchased one of these? and how did you like the quality? Thanks for any reply.

Hi there,

Another source is ECS Automotive Concepts.  I haven't purchased glass from them but their decal reproductions are very good.  They are supposed to offer "factory exact" date coded glass for Ford vehicles.

For what it's worth, I personally attribute "greenish" tint bands observed on original windshields to decades of UV exposure...

All my ultra-low-mile 60's era Fords with tinted windshields sport a blue band.

Rick,

That makes a lot of sense.  I specifically recall getting in my neighbors brand spanking new 69 Cougar (a Ford employee lease car) as a kid, and looking through the windshield, and asking "what is that blue thing is" on the windshield.  It was pretty high tech compared to the red/red 66 six cylinder low option Mustang coupe we had.

Just an update on my windshield install. Had great luck with installing the new headliner and now it was time for a new windshield. I followed a recommendation to try ECS for a windshield replacement. Was very pleased with the service and product. They made an exact copy including the etching (my date code),tinted windshield with the blueish band. I'll post a pic of the stamping when I get home. It's nice to have glass without chips, scratches, or rub marks!

Cool, thanks for the feedback.  I'm buying a complete set of glass from ECS for a 64 1/2 coupe.  Very anxious to receive it!

Here's a pic of the etching. Sorry but it was the best pic I could get. Date code was 4f. I thought it was done very nicely. I'm very happy with it.
