Headlight bucket - which black
« on: September 23, 2013, 05:06:08 PM »
Ok, searched for this but not finding the answer.  What variation of black would the headlight buckets be for an Oct 64 SJ?  I mean the sheet metal cup the headlight directly sits in, not the larger pot metal assembly.  If I'm using incorrect terminology, please let me know.

They look like they might have been originally gloss black, but could also be semi gloss.  Would they match the black used on the engine compartment?

Thanks in advance

I think originals were Gloss Black with no primer being used, but I have seen Service replacement Buckets use Semi-Gloss.  Others may have other experiences, but Those are mine.

They were more glossy then the engine compartment, and they were also dipped.

They did look like they had been dipped.  Definite lines and some runs.  Going with gloss black unless someone says otherwise.  Thanks all.

I would go semi-gloss black.  These were dipped, so naturally the appearance will be more slick.

Could someone clarify or post a picture of the area that needs to be blacked out?  I'd like to replicate this detail on some of my cars, and I wasn't aware that the headlight buckets carried a blackout from the factory.
Too much junk, too little time.

Talking about the semi-circle cup for the headlights.

You can get a pretty good look at the headlight bucket in the Martha and the Vandellas assembly line video.  It definitely has some gloss to it, at least on the Dearborn cars.
