66 SJ Radiator
« on: September 22, 2013, 10:52:30 PM »
I have a radiator that came with a San Jose, C code, 66 hardtop.  I had it re cored to a three row.  After a while the top solder seam let go so I put it in storage and forgot about it.  The only stampings I can see are on the tank top.  They are W-MO and below that 12 65.  The fill spout is off-set to the LEFT, hose openings are located on the RIGHT and it has the auto trans fittings/tank.  Ideas on the origins or why it is not marked with a C4ZE ?  Thanks,  Brian

Sorry I don't see anything out of the nor - here is just one of the examples I have

By the time this radiator was made the producer/contractor had started labeling the radiators with a soldered  on tag rather than the imprinted top tank. Likely this gave them more flexibility and saved them money

Looks like photo example you posted leaked in the same place.  Interesting about the brazed tag by late 65.  The scheduled build date for this car was 12-15-65.    Thanks,  Brian

Here is an example with the separate tag, rather than the "stamped in tank" C4ZE number.

I've seen the separate tag on SJ radiators dated as early as 9 65.

Thanks for the picture Brant.  I' am learning some new stuff here about these radiators.  I honestly never really noticed the brazed on tag or its location.

Thanks Jeff.  I already figured when the radiator shop torched the shoulder clamps, for the new core, there went the tag.  Don't have to worry about that sort of thing any more.  All the local radiator shops have closed, most of the machine shops as well as all the chrome shops.  Brian

FYI the metal tag is not "brazed" on but is soldered on which makes them much easier (much easier then brazing) to add to a radiator with one missing. A propane torch ,solder ,flux and the metal tag and you can make your dated radiator historically correct.

I've found that JB Weld works quite well to easily attach the tag...
