Non-cable attached 1964 1/2 gas cap ??
« on: September 20, 2013, 05:06:51 PM »
Can anyone tell when they stopped using the non-cable attached gas cap on the early cars?? My June 64' built coupe has the standard cable attached gas cap but I can't be sure it was original to the car. Thank you!

See this previous thread on the topic, or just search "gas cap": http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=4822.msg37865#msg37865

Thanks Chris. My fuel neck has the 5 slots as well but I replaced the tail panel and can see the one "rounded" hole for the cable bolt to pass, (65-66 style). Since the hole will be too big for the screw to bite to, I will have to get inventive and maybe use a dab of glue to hold it in place for the look.

Keep in mind that a fuel filler neck is something easily replaced.  On a June '64 car, I would lean more towards a cable cap.

I have a 64 1/2 Coupe with a June 8, 1964 scheduled production date that was actually built a few weeks later.  It has the no cable gas cap.

Thanks for all the input! I think the gas cap was replaced with the cable one during it's life. I was told that these gas caps were easy pickings to steal since they were not attached. No doubt if this was replaced, it could have been for that reason and ofcourse get one with the cable attched to prevent it from going missing again.  I saw in the other link/post that another memeber has a June 29th 1964 Dearborn car without the cable, (same build as mine), so what the heck, I'm might as well treat it to the early 64 1/2 cap!  :)

My 64.5 convertible with a scheduled build date of 19 June has the no cable gas cap and 5 oval slots on the filler neck.
