Basics of paint, seam sealer, sound deadener - 68 San Jose

What was the basic order of application?  (San Jose, 68's in general, April if it makes a difference)

Trunk gets (primer, not factory but adding etch to protect) seam sealer first, then sound deadener on rear 1/4 panel inside, then body color?

Front outside aprons get body color, then deadener on aprons fore and aft of suspension, then black?

Rear wheel wells; sealer, deadener fairly heavy and in most visible areas, body overspray?

Are these basics outlined in a post/doc somewhere for general reference?

The order of sealer or sound deadener is not important IMHO in this case (year and plant) but yes that is basically the order - and ending with body color. If your car had rear bumper guards you want to make sure that the bumper guard brackets (bolts) are sealed and installed before exterior color is applied. And don't forget the dolly marks (protecting the metal in some way) also

Normally no or very little body color was applied forward of where the firewall was located so no body color in the wheel well was typical before the black. Sealers were applied before the black paint was applied to the inner fender panels and shock towers (as well as the engine compartment and radiator support) After the car was assembled and before the front wheels were installed the front wheel wells were sprayed (either fairly completely or with three passes on the inner panels and foot box and firewall section) with sound deadener


Rear wheel wells; sealer, deadener fairly heavy and in most visible areas, body overspray?

Sealers applied, sound deadener (after primers this year and plant) staying away from the wheel lip but over some of the exposed frame rail in the opening, then a direct application of body color onto the sound deadener and exposed frame rail with over spray traveling towards the center and rear of the car where we find paint on the forward tip/edge of the gas tank drop and rear frame rails (bottom and outer surface.


Are these basics outlined in a post/doc somewhere for general reference?

Posts- No more than here though there are multiple pictures showing these details.

Documents - No I've not drawn these sections of the cars, in stages of application, as of yet and made them available.

If you want (and as I find time this busy week) we can go through each area looking at similar cars built around your cars specific date. You will need a little patience with me at this time ;)

On the headlight buckets, did they get any blackout inside or just body color?

Headlight buckets - 68 SJ  all body color with a good amount of direct and over spray on the back side (depending on the exterior surface near by)  exterior color

No black out

Thanks Jeff.

Just finished stripping today, prep for etch begins next week, so have some time.  Any tips appreciated.  its the late April GT/CS.

I know where the seam sealer went in the trunk, just not sure if the inner 1/4's was the only deadener.

As there is some evidence of past painting not 100% sure all I see is original in the rear wheel well/front apron and splash shield area.

.. and the underside is not being touched, all red oxide has been cleaned and original dolly marks are being left as-is.  Just body, trunk (due to PO coating it with some black asphalt/goo product that was fun to clean) front aprons, and engine bay repaint so refreshing/recreating those areas.

One odd thing on the aprons and engine bay.  When stripping there was white (Wimbledon white car) under the black on the aprons where the VIN stamps were, both sides.  OEM stamps and no black under the white.  Same in most of the engine bay. As you note no color forward of firewall this seems odd. 

It may have been stripped and painted white then blacked out, but as poor as the second paint job was I can't see this as having been done, they taped most trim so to strip the engine bay would seen odd, but maybe... so none would have had body color in the engine bay pre-black?

None is a strong word. I think not typical would be a better way of discribing if body color paint was done on the aprons and engine bay from my observations.My 2 cents.

There is a lot of variability in the extent of body color, pre-black, in the engine compartment.  I've seen it all the way up to the front radiator support, for the extreme.  I would say it is not unusual to see it at the shock towers.  I would expect to see it on the firewall and onto the hinge area.

I find a few - very few that have paint up to the VIN or more but this might be one out of every 400 or so San Jose built cars. Always figured that was a fill-in in or new painter but it was wasted effort an material since all of the color was typically covered at that plant. Yes we can always find exceptions (some even made it into print on original road test articles) and those seem to multiple when people see them and believe that is the norm or if there was one I can/should copy that so my car can be "different" :(
