Correct detail for 1964 1/2 leaf springs
« on: September 12, 2013, 08:57:52 AM »
I am getting close to replacing the rear leaf springs on my 64 1/2 and was wondering about the correct details of the springs. The car is a 1964 June built Dearborn coupe with a 260 V8 and 3 speed. Can anyone tell me if the springs should be natural or black, and if black, then flat, gloss, or satin? Also, what identifying srtipes should be on them if any? I have seen specific color stripes on other restored cars that denote type and weight limit?  Also spacing distance of the stripes would be helpful too. Thanks! ;D

They would be natural with a dark heat-treated appearance and plain steel clamps.

The markings may have been stripes or spray dots, depends on what was going on during that time of production and assembly plant.  Getting the finish of the springs and clamps is more important than the paint markings.

I can strip the new set of springs of their black paint but how could you duplicate the heated look?

Have you tried soaking them in evaporust to see if maybe the stripes/dots will show themselves...

Hmmm. Not finding anything when I search here?? As for the evaporust question, the original springs are VERY pitted and I'm not even sure I can read a part number on the bottom of them, (I was thinking of reusing the main spring with the part number by having the local spring shop replace it with the main from the aftermarket springs). I will try to decipher any markings once they are off the car but was looking for the easy way out if someone else had already found this.  ;D
