Engine and C4 VIN Stamp question....
« on: August 30, 2013, 06:20:04 AM »
Engine and C4 were pulled and found a partial VIN stamp.  San Jose GT/CS I have posted on recently, late April build.

Sequence number of car is 159241, partial VINs on both engine and trams are 15941, missing the 2... (both have the year/plant prefix) thinking a mis stamp but odd its on both.  As they are different fonts (assuming different dies for the steel block vs alloy trans housing) and I am unsure if they would have been done at the same time as a mated pair (same worker, more likely then) or separately (possibly different workers, so then less likely).

In removing the engine the guys at the shop were of the opinion the set looked like it had never been out of the car... hard to say, but it all looks pretty right....

I know mis-stamps occurred, wondering if anyone has seen anything like this before.

I think same stamp used for trans/block. Mis stamps occur and the odds of yours being perfect for 5 of 6 digits is too random to have me conclude is is not a mis stamp. I had a friends GT 500 that block and trans were both off by exactly 10,000 like 179234 instead of 169234.

Thanks Tim, as you noted the fact they are a matching error is odd.  The font did look a bit different, but maybe just due to the stamp going deeper in the softer trans housing...

Going to decode some of the parts to check dates as I clean it up, and if it all lines up will make the judgment its original and just "one of those things".

A few photos are here, if anyone is willing to take a look and note anything that looks way out of the ordinary for a late April Milpitas 289/C4 the input would be appreciated.... fuel pump and oil filter are replacements.  Dizzy cap is too.  ;)  Trans cooler lines look to have been cut/spliced and/or replaced, but the radiator is FoMoCo.

One more... on the trans, no markings are readily evident in a quick look.

In clean up, where to look for remnants of any factory inspection marks and probable colors?

Look anywhere  on the case and tailshaft. Most of the time trans have been  rebuilt and rattle canned so the marks are gone. If there you can find more than a dozen from writing to spray can marks on automatics

Thanks Tim... in a bit of carchaeology the ohter night it looks like some work may have been done to the engine and trans as some bits look repalced (engine mount bolts seem odd, a few other items), but the trans casing does not look painted. Will get some wax and grease remover and a buch of rags to it this weekend...
