Might be the first rotation number since that one and one sometimes found under exterior color on the hood are just that - under the exterior color. But these are found rarely so the common practice may have been to remove them before paint was applied and the only ones we see today are the ones where the worker screwed up and missed it :(

As a note this particular thing is a 67-68 San Jose only think so far/from the tens of thousands  cars I've seen

I also have a rotation number on the rear valance of 630, and 30 to match on my fuse box, are these the second rotation number?

from the numbers you have seen under hoods and trunk lids, would these typically be up to double/triple digits, or just single digits?

Yes the 630 is likely (considering where you found them) your cars second rotation number

single/double/triple digits number (except for a period in 69 at Dearborn) depending on what the machine spit out. Any number (in sequence) from 001 (or 1 depending on where it was found) through 999

ok, and the numbers just rolled over whenever they hit the 1000 mark, regardless of what day it was? so it may not have been the 8th car that day, but could have been 1008 for example?

Corect that is my understanding and what I've been told by the plant managers and workers

so it may not have been the 8th car that day, but could have been 1008 for example?

Or the 3rd of the day or the 245th of the day.............. Only ones that would be interesting (if we knew them) would be the rotation numbers and the matching VINs from the first day of production each year. But we don't

More likely an 18, as I've never seen an eight with the non-closed loop at the bottom of the 8.
