Decal Placement/Metuchen 9/19/68 Mach 1
« on: August 24, 2013, 10:31:13 PM »
Trunk/deck lid is stamped C9ZB 63 and is dated 9 3 2C.  A 9/19/68 built Metuchen Mach 1.  Paint is original, T5 Candyapple Red, and quite faded.  Weather stripping appears to be original and the trunk latch has lost what ever finish was originally on it and is now grayish bare metal.  The underside of the trunk latch seems to have a gold tint to the mostly clear finish and has the stamped letters; M  S. The Ford Certification tag, center, is C8AB-6220492-A and the jack usage tag is C9ZB-17093-B.  The rear spoiler and brackets were not available for the 1969 Mach 1.  Reasonably sure this an accurate example of an assembly line piece.   Brian

Might want to include plant and date in the thread title for others looking later ;)

I was compiling a list of parts for plating in various finishes and one of the pieces I had in question was my trunk latch, for an Oct 69 Dearborn Mach 1. Mine is exactly as described by Brian, but I would say the yellow zinc on the underside, where it was pressed against the metal, was unmistakable. I had assumed these were clear zinc. Now it looks like, along with the door strikers/spacers and (visible portion of the) door latch, that it should be plated yellow zinc. Hmmm, that just leaves the trunk latch-no evidence of gold/yellow on that...

Getting a bit off thread since its titled decals  but :)

I've never seen the body of a trunk latch finished in zinc dichromate -  the dogs of the latch - yes. But not the body.  As for the sticker I've never see dichromate either and wonder if we have a reaction taking place between the surface and plating going  kind of like you have when rubber comes in contact and changes the look of the plating
