69 Mach I/Grande door panel speaker cut out
« on: August 02, 2013, 02:09:58 AM »
Are there plastic inserts to accept a screw surrounding the speaker hole to mount either the speaker or the grill, or do the screws just go directly into the sheet metal?
Grill screws are readily available, but I can't find any info on the speaker mounting screws, and I need a set of 8 thanks.

I can only speak for my SJ Mach1. Screws go right into the sheet metal.

Thanks all, that will make it easier to repair my doors.
Unlikely I'll find a factory speaker door pair, but now I can use plain doors and make the cutouts.
I see there are templates on eBay.
What I really need are just the section of the door in that area to stitch into my original doors.
Doors rusted out underneath are usually still good where the speaker goes, and are all I need for donors.

The speaker hole looks like it was cut with a dull butter knife.  8)

Guess your working on a Mach I or a Grande?

Carpet was normally cut off following the back side as a guide. So its (for lack of better words) is a whole with the bottom edge open /no door panel or carpet edge

Will look and see if I have some pictures of that area and a door panel and post.

Had to look into my 70 examples before I found a Mach I or Grande door with panel in place but speaker and grill removed

Sorry they are not the best but the focus at the time the picture was taken was not this specific detail

Here's a template for cutting the door:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/69-70-1969-1970-FORD-MUSTANG-MACH-1-DELUXE-DOOR-SPEAKER-TEMPLATE-/382180440492?hash=item58fbbab9ac:g:N70AAOSwzqFY8oHK&vxp=mtr

I haven't been able to find the screws for securing the speaker to the door.
Last I checked that part number wasn't available from AMK.
Not sure if the grill mounting screws are black or silver colored either.
Repro grills look pretty good from the front, but don't have the paper and foam strips on the back of the grill surprise, surprise.

Silver - look to be zinc or cad not chrome

Thank you     yes is a mach 1    so the grill cover is onto the carpeting when screwed down  ont the top and sides   so the only door tempate is a ebay one

Don't understand. There are four screws one at each corner - that have nothing to do with the carpet

The carpeted section of the door panel is cut on three sides, top, front and rear edges leaving the bottom of the cutout open. No carpet or vinyl trim visible below the speaker cover

so the only door template is a ebay one

That template that is being sold is for cutting the door if your adding speakers or have replaced the door(s) during the restoration not for the door panel.

Is it the only one? Sure there are other ways to get that template 7Lscjracer was just offering one he had found

The grill pins the carpet down at the top and sides
If you look at the grill the bottom is thicker so it reaches the door metal and the sides and top are thinner to accommodate a little perimeter of carpet underneath
If your grills are the same thickness all around then they're for standard door panels

A few pictures to help

Holes for speaker and holes for grill mount/attachment

Appears that something has been dropped on the top edge of the speaker holes - reason why its not perfectly oval ;)
