69 Quarter Ext's ?
« on: June 20, 2013, 04:12:25 PM »
My car has the fiberglass rear quarter extensions.  I rarely hear these mentioned and am curious about how it was determined which cars got them and why they stopped installing them ?  No notation on my build sheet or Marti and I don't see a ' Buck Tag ' code for fiberglass extension's.  Did Ford make up one batch, spread them out to the assembly plants and install them until they were gone ?  Did the 69  B 9's and 2's get them ? Do any of the 70 cars have them ?  My car is early 1969 production and East coast.   Just curious.  Brian

I always thought it was an early production 1969 thing, probably till the tooling for the die cast parts was ready. I parted out two fastbacks that had them, both really early Metuchen cars.. One was a 6 cylinder car so I don't think it was a performance thing... ( the other was a 351 Windsor 2bbl mach1, early enough that it didn't say "mach 1" in the decklid tape stripe)

Mine has the fiberglass extensions.
I have a later set of pot metal caps on the shelf to drill for a prop rod for my heavier 70 wing.
My trunk always stays up though without a prop rod, so I still have the fiberglass caps on the car.
It's not like my hinges are rusty or bind, the spring tension is enough to keep the lid up.
To state the obvious, don't prop rod drill a fiberglass cap, the hole will deform with use.
