leaf spring questions
« on: June 15, 2013, 09:29:14 AM »
A couple leaf spring questions:

1. Knowing that my rear axle housing was changed prior to when I bought the car in 1980, I'm looking to determine if the leaf springs are original.  Referring to the first pic below, the date codes are 231 (Aug 19, 1966) and 320 (Nov 16, 1966).  The C7ZA-5556-AE numbers match.  Any comments on this?  Does someone have documentation on the "AE" version for applicability?

2. Are the clamps correct?  If yes, should I reuse or get new?  What is a good place to get the correct style?

3. Any thoughts on the risks of using old "U" bolts as discussed in the following link?

4. Finally, any recommendations on where to get proper spring pads?

Thanks, John

They are dated properly for a '67 car.  I can't say if the numbers are correct for your application though.

The clamps can be re-used, but you would have to be very careful when removing.  So long as they aren't rust pitted, they can be blasted and tumbled for a nice appearance.

The pads can be cleaned and re-used, but there are new ones available.  You might be able to buy them from Eaton.

The round holed clamps are reproduced in small numbers by Jim Cowles

I've never had problems (in a show or street car) reusing the factory U clamps

Many thanks for the replies.

The only remaining question is applicability confirmation of C7ZA-5556-AE

Technically that plus a unresolved issue from a previous post question about paint stripe colors - but that appears to be very elusive information since this is not a Shelby or 390 model that is more apt to be researched and restored.

I happen to work within sight of Eaton Springs.  Will stop by and if there is potential value to others will report back what I find.

FYI The Eaton Springs I believe you are referring to is not the Eaton that made the springs for Ford in the 60's. Detroit Eaton is small in comparison to the huge multi national conglomerate that made springs for Ford for our 60's Mustangs but has a similar name.  However I understand that they have most (but not all ) copies of the Ford engineering drawings so that they can make to specifactions the vast majority of different Mustang springs. Hopefully they can shed some light.

Bob, you are correct that I'm talking about Eaton Springs and not Eaton Corp.
