Topic: Correct Hipo Air Cleaner

Hi,

I have an Oct 64 SJ K-code fastback, and am wanting to verify which hipo air cleaner assembly is correct.  It is a road draft tube car, as it has the C5OF-L carb and non-drilled out carb spacer.  It also has a DSO of Dallas, TX.  From this I assume it would be an open ventilation setup, i.e. no tube from the oil filler cap to air cleaner base. 

I picked up an original early style (double-hump) air cleaner assembly.  The base is black, not date coded, and is not drilled out for a nipple.  It only has one indentation in the base however instead of two.  Is this single indentation an early feature, and does anyone know if this assembly would be correct for my car?  I have read per Bob Mannel and others that the double hump lids found their way onto cars for a while into 1965 production.

Just to follow up, I found out last weekend at Carlisle that I need a non-drilled out base with two indentations.  The color should be gold.  I can probably use either the early double hump chrome lid (shown on the left), or a later flat top style chrome lid (right).  I compared a Feb 65 hipo coupe there that had the C5OF-L carb and road draft tube.  It's original air cleaner was a gold non-drilled out base with two indentations and the flat top chrome lid.  Mine being earlier, I can get by with either lid from what I understand.

Bob's book indicates my black base with single indentation would be from a 1963 Falcon sprint.

How many 63 Falcon Sprints were made?  Cannot be many of those things left!

I wouldn't think so.  According to the site below, there were here were 10,479 Sprint Hardtops (series 17, model 63C), and 4,602 Sprint convertibles (series 15, model 76B) produced in 1963.  Also, although Bob's book says that air cleaner base was used for a 63 Falcon Sprint, it doesn't say that was the only application.  Could have been used in more makes or years as well.

Got the base painted, so thought I'd post pics of the correct base as well.  Two indentations, not drilled out.  Also there is no date stamp although this is an original piece.  I've had a couple people tell me they've run across a lot of original bases without date codes.  In fact, the K-code coupe I compared with at Carlisle had an original base without date stamp.

My Oct 24,64 K Coupe - Dearborn - road draft tube - Has the base like your showing with 2 indents and no date code. I've been told it's original, but a long time ago I was told there was a Tooth Fairy, so who knows. Looks good!

Any follow up on which style of Hipo air cleaner lid would be correct for an Oct 64 SJ K code?  I'm reading in Bob Mannel's book that some early '65 Hipos still used the 64 style double hump lid, and were switched over to the flat top style lid at some undefined point, assuming as inventories were used up.

From what I've researched, it sounds like either might be acceptable for my car's timeframe, but looking for data points or input.  I think this may be one of those "no defined line" things.

The one on the right.  That is the one it appears was delivered on the at least one of the three K code fastbacks (Oct built) fastbacks that went to Shelby to be converted into the first three Shelby's

Thanks Jeff.  That's a good data point.  I always see that one on Hipo's.  I do like the double hump better tho.
