'66 Meuchen rear valence screws
« on: February 08, 2010, 11:29:41 AM »
I haven't been able to find a good reference, so hoping some folks here might know the answer to this.  On a '66, the rear valence was hung before the car was painted, just like the other 2 plants.  I am used to seeing the small pan-head phillips screws on Metuchen cars.  The question is if they were all installed before paint or just 2 outers like San Jose normally did?

Charles my '66 fastback was also a Metuchen car. Unfortunately it received several repaints prior to my ownership. While I can add another confirmation of the screw type (mine also had the small pan head screws), I can't give you any good info on how many screw were installed at paint time in the factory.  :(

CHARLES.

in no way am i saying this as gospal but i did see a nighmist blue c code coupe some years ago (build date 03rd February 1966) in original paint that had all screws heads painted body colour to suggest all may have been on from the start.

will see if i still have those phots to confirm

best regards.

We couldn't tell from the parts coupe, it had a mix of fasteners on it.  We can always fix them later.  Will probably use the small pan-head screws for now and paint one on each end (second in like SJ cars.)

Just as a somewhat supporting fact - I believe later NJ cars had all of them (rear valance screws) painted at the factory)

Sorry charles should have been a little clearer, this was a 66 coupe i viewed in Australia not one in the US.
Went to have a look at thar car as we dont get many NJ mustang within Australia. the vast majority are San Jose built examples here.

Had the images when in Utah but laptop crassed and subsequently lost many of the reference photos i had stored away.

Will continue to look for them though.

Regards.
