Sealer Recommendation for Shock Tower

Just curious if anyone has a recommendation for a particular sealer (brand name and number), they've used in the bottom of the shock tower. Specifically the rectangular recessed area on top of the frame rail on the outside of the tower (behind the spindle)? Due to the thickness involved I'm concerned about putting the "wrong" sealer in which would shrink when dry. Thanks!

I always use a 2 part seam sealer as it cures quickly and doesn't shrink up and crack like many non catalyzed seam sealers that are applied with a conventional caulking gun. The only problem is 2 part seam sealers require a special gun to apply it. If you don't have on, the supplier may rent one to you. I use 3M products mostly for seam sealing and have had good results. 3M makes a heavy bodied seam sealer that would work well in the area of the shock tower your referring to. Sorry don't have a part #.

In the past  have used some SEM seam sealer. Its a small double tube setup  (2 part) that  mixes correctly as it is dispensed out the nozzle and works great. Our local body supply shop will let you use the gun for free, just leave a $30 deposit, and then they give it back as long as its returned clean.

After all of the time that has passed since my original post you'd think I'd have a picture! Unfortunately it's been slow going and I haven't reached that point yet. I'm close, but obligations in a new job haven't pretty much prevented me from doing anything since last fall. The really unfortunate thing is I've been so close it's not even funny! I'd be happy to post some pics when I do get it done. The weather needs to warm up some on the weekends before I can get to it though.

Just as a mention (since this is posted in the general - All Years section) that all cars didn't get sealer at the base of the shock tower pocket.   ;)   Don't want anyone making an assumption and having to correct it later

By the way, I'm using a Wurht sealer with very good results.

If you go to the Wurth sight, you will see it. Look for sprayed sealant, black. I will get back to you with the exact product number this week end. Carm.

Jeff, can you elaborate as to your statement that not all cars received sealer in the shock towers. Was it because of the region where they were built, or did it have to do with model year? As always, thanks for your input.
My car had it at the bottom of the shock towers, so I'm putting it back. Carm.

Which Wurth Sealer have you used?

It's called Sprayable seam sealer. Made in Germany by Wurth in black, white or grey. The black sealer which we are using is art. No: 893-226-228-A. About $20.00 Can. per 310 ml. tube. You should be able to get for cheaper in the US, but the Wurth site have it about $24.00 US. Carm.

Yes depending on factory and year not all got sealer at the bottom of the shock tower - don't have a nice neat list of all years and plants to post this moment

The sealant filled the drain holes in the shock towers if not filled completely so they could hold moisture and accelerated  the rusting problems. On the cars that did the sealant was often an extension it appears (part of another application pattern) along the frame to inner seam or at least it extended up out of the pocket on both ends slightly in those where it was applied but the frame to inner seam was not fully sealed

Sometimes what I find in that pocket is nothing but a build up of grease, grime and road by products - some might mistake this as sealer since its often dray and caked in place - takes a screw driver and work to dislodge

Another product that would work well for this application is the Fusion spray product IMHO
