68 Bench seat questions
« on: April 23, 2013, 10:25:56 PM »
Hi All,

I have heard that the trim on the back of the bench seat backs is different to the backs of bucket seats? is this true?

is there a special type / grade of foam used in these classic cars that i should be asking for when making custom seat foam for my bench seat?

is the outer hinge trim piece similar to the bucket seat hinge trim?

regarding the recall on the seat hinges, i assume that the repair kit will be similar for both bucket and bench seat?

I have heard from SMS saying they think they have the comfortweave i am after. I am not holding my breath that they do have the correct upholstery in stock, i will be asking for a sample to be sent before i make my mind up. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with SMS for comfortweave lately? i heard that black is hard to get, but anyone else got other standard colours in correct style lately? i am thinking that it could be possible the lesser ordered colors may be still available in correct style?

Cheers, Tim

I used SMS for 68 comfortweave and was very satisfied.

On #2.

The foam is the same stuff, but the cut of the seat base is different.  Not curved on the inner front corner to fit tighter to the "hump", standard bucket foam leaves a gap.  I franken-foamed a et of ACI and some off cuts from OEM and then put a thin layer of 1/2" medium density foam over the top to smooth any seams.  Came out fine.  Not sure what you would use if you were trying to fabricate your own, I'd go repro and modify to suit, go to a local shop and pick a foam of similar density and cut-to-fit.

I ordered some '68 Ivy Gold comfort weave some time ago a year-ish?.  They sent me samples in Oz, I picked what I wanted. They shipped it direct to TMI who made me a custom set of covers.  Very happy with the results.  And yes, they noted that black is becoming very hard to find, and may take some time to source.
