"Correct" Parchment Upholstery?
« on: April 17, 2013, 01:20:11 AM »
Looking for a little guidance in the "correct" color choices for a '66 D9 interior (Parchment w/ Palomino Appointments). For Christmas the wife ordered me a headliner and matching sun visors in Parchment from VCM. Well, I finally got a chance to compare them to some original material (yeah, I know, it's been awhile since Christmas!). The problem is that the color is too dark. It almost resembles a saddle color. The original material was more cream colored. Same goes for the vinyl covering for the rear interior trim panels (coupe...and yes I know, the covered trim panels are for a deluxe interior). I bought a set from NPD and when I just opened them, same thing. EVERYTHING is labeled Parchment. Anyone had this problem color matching for the lighter color? Recommendations on the "correct" color to buy? Thanks!

Guess I'm the only person in the world that has had to restore a Parchment interior!

The mis-match with original is typical of pretty much all of the reproduction colored vinyl material used for seats, door panels, etc...  If you want it absolutely right, you'll need to acquire some NOS vinyl that matches exactly and have a set of covers made.  Scott Halseth at NPD can get the covers made for you.

Thanks Charles. I'm curious about the "name" for the color. Stick with Parchment or should it be "Off White"? Notably the headliner. I don't really need an exact match, but something lighter....I think! :o

Thanks again Charles and I apologize for the confusion. I'm aware that the Ford name is Parchment. Since that doesn't seem to be working with the aftermarket industry, I'm curious what name to be looking for with them that anyone has had better luck with regarding color matching. (Hopefully that's a little clearer!) :D

I'm not aware of any other color, but you might want to try and find a 1966 Detroit Trim book, which should give the Ford code for the actual vinyl.  If you can't get the number, I have a friend that should have the book that I could ask.

If it's not too much trouble, I'd greatly appreciate the info! Thanks!

Here are the Parchment vinyl codes for 1966:

L-2613  Sierra
L-2945  Rosette
H-837   Crater headliner

Take into consideration if you decide to hunt for NOS material that there are different thicknesses of vinyl that you will need to know about.

Looking at this display of swatches http://www.championfalcon.com/6667-falcon-2-door-sports-coupe-door-panels-pair-parchment-p-17775.html,

I noticed that there were two hues of parchment for 1965 - 67: L-2613 and L-3096. Could this be the reason for the confusion among the reproductions?

Just figured I'd add an update on this subject. I sent off to SMS Auto Fabrics for some samples of the L-2613 and L-3096 Parchment vinyl. The L-3096 is actually listed everywhere as a '67 color and is referred to as Light Parchment. The color difference in person is HUGE! The L-2613, which is listed as a 1966 color is a dark tan and almost looks like Saddle. The L-3096 is a more "creamy" color, kind of like a slightly more tan, off white. This is actually the color I needed, and is the same shade I've seen in '66 cars with a D9 interior.

As a side note I previously color matched the carpet samples with an original, unfaded piece which was the lower layer in the front/rear overlap under the seats. The only company I could find with the correct match is ACC and it's listed as Dark Gold. It;s not 100%, but super close. Charles had previously listed this color some time back on another thread. I still need to make sure the headliner/sunvisor material is correct (or at least close). This is a super aggravating color to get everything matched together!!

Thought I'd share my findings so far with others in hopes of helping avoid the frustrations I've had to go through!

Might want to try and get a sample from http://www.smsautofabrics.com   They sent me a sample of ivy gold vinyl and it matched perfectly compared to samples I got from ACC.

Chris are talking about getting a carpet sample from them? However, if it's vinyl you mean, ummm, I posted that's who I received the samples from.  ;)
