K/H Caliper markings
« on: April 15, 2013, 04:24:07 PM »
Hi,

I put a rebuilt set of Kelsey Hayes calipers on my car, and was wondering if anyone could help identify the markings on the old set.  I'd like to know if they were unique to my car/year and so should be saved, or if it's ok to turn them in to get my core charge back.  My car is an Oct 64 SJ Fastback.

Pictures attached.  The markings on one appear to be:

Left on end:
65-6H
59983

Side of one:
K/H  2B
I   59977  C  (C is underlined?)

Right on end:
266-5
56971-RH

Well the core charge is $300 for the pair and I'm not even sure they are original to the car.  I was hoping I could verify the stampings before I spend the money.

Believe the 266-5 one would be original and would fit with your production date, assuming 266 is a julian date code.  Not sure on the other one.

Have you measured the hose inlet size for the old ones and new ones?  You may know that '67 is a larger size than 65-66.

Thanks Charles.   That makes sense.  I wonder if the other one with "65-6H" is Aug 6, 1965.  Maybe K/H or Ford switched to a different date format by that time?

I didn't know about the larger hose opening on 67's.  I'll have to check.

I was wondering how a late 65 date code would be correct for a " My car is an Oct 64 SJ Fastback." ??

Yeah, really.  I'd love to get $300 for a pair of used calipers!

No doubt.  I questioned that price with the local Mustang shop, Mustang Corral, but they responded that K/H calipers are "getting hard to find", and claim that is what the company they get them from charges.  The company is Midwest Illinois Caliper Co.  I have left a message to find out.

     Took a look at my calipers and have some numbers;

     Left side   58982
                    63  6-H
                    56972-L
                    K/H 58877   A large 3 also a large C
     Right side K/H 58962   A large 3 and a stamped triangle
                    ?6971-RH    16-5
                    K/H 56877   A large C with a solid line below it
                                      A stamped  23  and a sideways  H
I have rebuilt these calipers a couple of times and can't recall if they were ever replaced.  I don't see any dates relevant to my 5/65 SJ car but more numbers to look at.  Brian

Thanks for the comparison Brian.  I'm wondering if the "63 6-H" is a date.....Aug 6, 1963?  Mine is "65-6H".  Pretty big coincidence that they both end in 6-H, so maybe that part is not a date.

Also, I think your "?6971-RH" may be 56971-RH.  That's what it is on mine.

The 63  6-H could be 65  6-H pretty hard to see clearly.  Same with the ?6971 could be 56971.  Brian
