68 power brake pedal question
« on: March 22, 2013, 08:47:13 PM »
Was out at the yard today and found a 68 Coupe, 8T01C,
that had power brakes and manual trans. I removed the
clutch and brake pedals only to find out that the brake
pedal was the short version and not the long one that pivots
higher up. The car didn't have the front spindles or brakes
on it so I couldn't tell if it had disc or drum brakes although
since it was a "C" code car I suspect they were front drums.

Did 68 power brake drum cars use the shorter pedal (pictured)
and the power disc brake cars use the longer pedal?

Also which style booster is this (pictured)?
I understand Ford used two different boosters in 68.

I checked the 68 assembly manual and it appears that power brake cars wither disc or drum used a longer pedal. The longer pedal was necessary to reduce the leverage for the power brakes. Most likely someone added the booster and had some overly sensitive brakes.
It is a Midlands booster in you picture witch is correct. Bendix will work but is not correct for 68.

It's an even bigger surprise when you install a power brake pedal the same as a non-power brake car.

Marty, wasn't 1967 that last year for power drum brakes? I don't think that power drums continued into 1968.

Scott I believe that you are correct but will do a bit more checking. Marty

One mystery solved, I checked the trans code on the data plate
which says the car was built with a C-4 so someone has put in
the clutch and brake pedals so that makes sense why it had
the short pedal instead of the long one.

Next question, since I bought the pedals pictured what year are
they out of? The clip used to retain the shaft was the wavy type
locking thin metal spring clip, did they go to that clip in 68 or what year?
