F70 x 14 Traction Tires w/Raised White Letters
« on: March 20, 2013, 06:40:40 PM »
The Marti Report on my 1969 GT convertible says my car originally came with F70 x 14 Traction Tires w/Raised White Letters. Can anyone tell me if these were Wide Oval tires or Polyglas tires? I have seen conflicting information as to what was originally on my Mustang.

Thanks.

My Marti report has the same wording.  The original spare is still in the trunk and is definitely a Goodyear Polyglas.

Thanks Jim. Does your original Polyglas spare include the tire size in white letters or not?

My car was built 3/18/69 in San Jose and has the "no size" sidewall design.

I have 2 70s with the original factory invoices. One from Dearborn and one from Metuchen. Nothing stated about Traction tires. Personally I don't trust the Marti Reports.

Interesting. So I'm guessing from your invoices that your Mustangs would have originally been fitted with the Firestone Wide Oval white lettered tires instead of the Polyglas tires? Did your Marti Reports state "F70 x 14 Traction Tires w/Raised White Letters"?

Ford did not use Firestone Wide Oval in 1969.  The "wide oval" was a generic term for this family of lower profile tires.

Thanks for the clarification Jim. Were the Polyglas tires with the size in white letters ever used on 1969 Mustangs? My Mustang was build in Dearborn on 4/8/69 if that matters at all.

My opinion is that no '69 cars should have the "size" version.  I guess it is possible on a very late model year car, but I think your May '69 car would be "no size".

Don't have a Marti report but I am the second owner of the Mach 1 and it did have Firestone Wide ovals on it. It was ordered with 5 tires and I still have the original Firestone spare in the trunk. Not sure about my Boss. Most all I have ever seen had Goodyear Poly Glass but I have seen a few shod with Firestones.

The Firestone F70x14 Wide oval was used in 69 and 70 but white sidewall only. The raised white letter version was introduced in the 71 model year. The Goodyear F70x14 Polyglas was no-size style until Nov.1969 according to Goodyear engineering prints. This is well into the 1970 model year. The earliest No size date I've seen is 3rd week November 1969.

My Mustang was built in the month of May in New-Jersey (05-22-1969).
my question is for tire size F70-14 goodyear polyglas.
it has you the size in white? or No size in white?
