Topic: 1965 Metuchen Engine compartment decal

When I pulled up the picture I noticed what seemed to be resisdue of a decal or sticker right next to the washer fluid bag.  I don't ever recall seeing a factory decal or sticker in this location.  Has anyone seen a sticker there before?  I had the same kind of residue near the starter seloid for the battery sticker.

The second photo is an example of a NJ car with the decal in question. Build date was July 20th 1964.

Very interesting - that appears to be the decal normally affixed to the Driver's Side shock tower if I was able to make it out clearly (it was hard to zoom in - it was fairly blury).  Is that correct?

Yes I believe so. It called the SERVICE RECOMMENDATIONS DECAL.

Thanks - I've never seen that decal affixed in that location.  It appears that my Metuchen car had the decal in a similar location.  The driver's side shock tower never showed any indication of a decal being affixed to it.  Given I haven't yet applied the engine compartment decals that's a timely bit of information.  :-)

That decal looks like repro.  Believe Original '65-'66 Service decals had a Double lined Black outer border.  Repros did not.. They had a Solid Fat Black outer border..

Hi Tony - yes the sample I posted is a repro - it was more just to confirm we were talking about the same decal.  I'm not aware of any suppliers that provide the double lined black outer border.

Well, looks like at least 2 cars with the odd ball decal placement. 

You might want to check out ECS, they are known for quality products.  It looks like the decal on their website could be the double line but you might want to verify.

Thanks very much for the recommendation.  I agree the decal on their website looks very much like the original double line.  As luck would have it I'm going to be near STL on business next week and I'll be about 15 minutes away from ECS.  So I'll drop by and check the decal out in person.

Remember, the three assembly plants were not building concourse grade cars, they were just building cars. I've seen the same label stuck sideways on the shock tower on San Jose cars.

It is interesting to see the variations - most likely due to different workers assigned to that station. Everyone tends to get into some form of rhythm or pattern when they do those sorts of jobs.

"Everyone tends to get into some form of rhythm or pattern when they do those sorts of jobs."  mainly due to boredom or bad attitude and I can speak from first hand experience, regarding boredom.

Once had a college job on a small 'assembly' line packaging foods like iced tea, etc. One job was putting the plastic scoops in the cans and I know some of you might have gotten 2 scoops (or ....even 3!   ) in your can once in awhile. Labels might have been upside down too. 

I don't have to guess how/why some of the things got done they way they did on our cars.

Back in the 60's and 70's, the San Jose assembly plant had a reputation of high alcohol and drug use (above and beyond other industries in the area). The myth was don't buy a car built on a Friday or Monday - Friday because the workers were thinking weekend - Monday was a hangover day. It's a wonder any car lasted this long.

Hey Rodster - I presume you meant the build date for that NJ car was July 20th, 1965.  NJ production didn't begin until February 1, 1965.  If so, my car and this NJ car were built exactly 1 day apart.  My car was built on July 21, 1965.  Therefore, it is possible that the same person on the line placed the decal in the same spot for both of those cars.

Hmm, guess I'm confused and didn't do my homework.  Isn't this G20 the date code on a NJ buck tag?
