67 8" differential marking
« on: March 05, 2013, 08:28:39 PM »
Took the differential out of the axle this evening and started the cleaning process.   The car was put on a ramp, sandblasted, and primed in 1980, which explains the red oxide on the lower half of the differential and some of the bolts.   The upper half of the axle retains a different color red oxide, along with what might be an "11" or "H" in yellow marking.  Any comments would be appreciated. Hopefully I can find more.  This is an automatic with 2:79 axle.  Thanks John

Thanks for sharing - shame that some one rattle canned red oxide over all the original stuff but can't change that now ;)

IMHO I would think that the mark, given the year, model and location of the mark) is a number likely related to the assembler or inspector. That would better match the pattern I've seen

Check your casting date on that pumpkin. It looks like it is from 1964?
As far as I know, by 1967 they should have the ribbing? May or may not have the fill plug, early 1967 8 inch housings had a fill plug in the back of the housing.

Thanks for the info, I had no idea.  Now I have something new to put on my shopping list.  Am I looking for something like the picture below, with appropriate dates of course?

My axle housing does have the fill plug.  Does that mean that the proper differential should NOT have one, or would there be two?

Related to the 1964 carrier, I found a "3" in the area of your "11" or "H" marking on a Jan 27, 1965 casting date carrier (don't know the assembly date tag was missing).  I have seen pictures of "1" and "2" s in the same area in my internet searches.  Makes sense that they are assembler or inspector numbers as Jeff says.  Also found an "8" on the lower driver's side of the carrier.  I have seen this on other carriers as well.  It seems logical that this is a quick way to identify the rear as an 8 inch variety.  Also found an "8" written on the inside of the axle housing which I assume is for the same quick ID.

Good luck in your search for the correct '67 carrier.

I am taking out my 68 one and putting it's gears/bearings/pinion-carrier into the 66 casting I have acquired.

You are welcome to the 68 casting after I change-over if you are interested.

Here's the one coming out.

Here's the one that's going in.

Thanks for the offer Bryan, but at this point I'll start the hunt for a date correct one.  After all, they only made hundreds of thousands of em.

This one is 7A7.  I thought it was a 68 but it is a 67.

I think 7A7  is JAN 7, 1967?
