Dist-O-Vac
« on: February 14, 2013, 04:08:50 PM »
Anyone have pictures of where the Dist-o-Vac module was mounted on the inside of the car?  What about the bracket that is attached to the speed sensor?  Was there a steel vacuum line that ran along the top of the engine from the temperature/vacuum valve in the intake manifold to the vacuum tree on the firewall?  I don't have any idea since we bought the car already disassembled.  1970 351C, 4V, FMX.  Thanks  I don't know if any others are interested or have seen this but I thought it was a good piece of info for the Dist-O-Vac.

Have also seen them mounted on the cowl in the engine compartment for some reason  - no don't believe I've ever taken one of that. They are color coded (color of plastic case) for identification/application. You've got the temp sender, speed that attaches along the speedo cable, control box, hard and soft vacuum hoses/tubing along the valve cover

What about the bracket that is attached to the speed sensor?

Had only found those floating - no bracket on the cars I removed them from

Believe the vacuum source for the PVS was a soft hose - only hard tubes were to and from the modular on the cowl/firewall

Here another view. I've got maybe a dozen emissions books- often good on explaining how things work - not always the best on how everything was installed

There is 2 steel lines that are mounted on the intake that are Vac lines . My brother has the same combo you have 70 Mach 1 3514V FMX.

Correct those allow the vacuum to pass through the control mod (inlet and return)

Thanks to everyone!  Found this too, differences between shaker and non-shaker and w/ a/c and w/o a/c.  http://www.mustangbarn.com/vacuum.html  I don't have the steel vacuum tubes, I'm guessing they won't be easy to find.  Any idea if they're the same style between shaker and non-shaker?  From the diagram, it looks like they could be.  I bought a partial setup, but it's for a Fairlane/Montego/Ranchero 351C 4V, and didn't get any tubes.  The speed sensor is the correct one (same p/n and correct electrical end) and is mounted to a bracket that's why I was asking where that was attached.  Maybe it wasn't on the Mustang.  The box is black, but the top is too so not correct for Mustang.  They used different electrical connecters and lengths between the colors of the box tops!  I can understand different lengths but different ends?!  I guess one of Ford's better ideas.  ::)

The Mustangs used the control box (ECM) that had the black housing and the blue cover rather than the black/ black one you have. The speed sesors are the same

Think I have a set of tubes - not sure if they are from a 302 or 351 but will try and dig them out of the Smog boxes

Most of the control modules that we have removed from 1970 cars have the black cover. http://www2.cougarpartscatalog.com/d0af-9e718-c.html

This is the information that I have posted on my online parts catalog:
D0AF-9E718-C Distributor modulator control module for 1970 Mercury Cougar and Ford Mustang with the M code 351C-4V engines and FMX or automatic transmission. The 'black box', supposed to have a blue cover. The Autolite Shop Tips guide describes this box as having a blue cover and a stamped part number of D0AF-9E718-S. The Ford MPC shows a master part number of D0AZ-9E718-C, and a box marked D0AF-9E718-C.

The 'black box', supposed to have a blue cover, but we mostly see them with a black cover from original cars. The Autolite Shop Tips guide describes this box as having a blue cover and a stamped part number of D0AF-9E718-S. The Ford MPC shows a master part number of D0AZ-9E718-C, and a box marked D0AF-9E718-C.

Which MPC would the information been taken from (possibly a 70 version)? Since later version may list only what will work (and available) rather than what was original.

Just asking ;)

BTW have the same Shop tips  just not a late 70 or early 71 MPC to look the other up  :(

What about my 2 White control boxes with Blue covers??  ;) One came from a 302 2V and one from a 351W 2V. Both from 70 Mustangs and they are both Original with ink stamped date codes. From what I know they Are different for different motor combos and there were at least 4 different control modules.

I also have a set of the steel tubes from 302 here.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-1971-1972-1973-Mustang-Mach-1-Cougar-Xr7-DISTRIBUTOR-MODULATOR-VACUUM-TUBES-/390205977604?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item5ada16b404

Not sure if they are different between 302 and 351C.

They are not correct for the application asked about here.

Did find a couple of sets for the 351C in a box today - will post a couple of pictures when I take them ;)

Thanks for tube pics.  Are they the same for 351C 4V w/shaker vs. non-shaker and w/ a/c or w/o?

I am going to retract what my boss originally said about black covers on black boxes. I have blue covers on black boxes and black covers on white boxes.

Looks like the blue covered ones, have an ink stamped date code, with the suffix -S .

I believe that the one posted in Marcus's picture is from a 302 engine? -V ?
