1966 Single Exhaust clamps?
« on: February 05, 2013, 02:59:58 PM »
Was told back in the Spring the exhaust clamps were wrong on our 66. Does anyone have a picture of what the correct clamps look like?

Thanks

Which clamp? There are two, the actual pipe to muffler clamp, and the pipe hanger. And just for drill, what engine, plant and month might be useful.

Brian, To the best of my Knoledge the larger bracket-looking things on the left side of your picture are TIE-DOWN plates/brackets-(the ones that the original sticker placed where the license plate goes says to remove)

It would be interesting (again) to re-visit the Tie-Down brackets as was done a couple of years ago either here or one of the other sites......

I don't think the ones you are showing are reproduced....

Can you please get and post some better pictures of just those brackets?

I think back in the day alot of exhaust shops cobbled aftermarket hangers TO these tie-down brackets...which made some feel that they were actually part of the exhaust brackets when in fact they were not.

The pipe clamp should look like the left hand middle item in the first picture. It's best described as a long 5/16 inch diameter rod threaded at both ends to 5-16-18 and bent into a "U" with a formed base retainer and two flange type retaining nuts. The pipe strap is a metal strip bent around to almost form a circle held together with either a large 5/16-9X1 1/2 hex head sheet metal screw or a 5/16-18X1 1/2 hex machine screw and nut. There are other types from other exhaust systems (dual) and other years that sometimes get into the mix.

Thanks,

Is the clamp that holds the tail pipe to the muffler the same?

Now to track them down.

I don't think the correct clamps and hangers will be hard to find in reproduction though I don't have much knoledge on single exhaust cars.....
I was able to get very correct parts for my '65 dual exhaust K car.....

My car is un-restored so want to put either good shaped originals or NOS. I see Virginia Mustang has these, guess that could be last resort -

Not to start a parts war, NPD (2013 catalog pg 147) indicates that the style shown is for a "late" 66. It is similar to what NPD states as "early" (and before) 66 that has a lower shoulder on the stamped bar. NPD also states that the nuts were cad plated. I'll let others confirm, dispute or deny any of this.

Thanks

Would an April build date be considered late?

Don't under estimate the quality of ALL reproduction parts, ALL reproduction parts aren't the same, Both NPD and VA Mustang both have very caring, passionate owners and give top quality customer service to boot.

I have bought from both in the past for a coupe I had, I agree they have great products and those are the only 2 shops I buy from. (bought a new car cover for the 66 this week from VA mustang).

Since I show my 66 in the MCA unrestored class I was under the impression repro parts are not acceptable thus the reason for wanting to find good used parts or NOS.
