Topic: Oil Cooler Hoses

I am in the process of restoring a few extra sets of oil cooler hoses.  The front half of the hoses that mount to the oil cooler itself always appear to have black paint on them - do we think this was assembly line applied?  Has anyone ever noticed a difference between assembly line paint application versus service replacement?  It appears from the few I have taken apart (both upper and lower hoses) that the paint had been dipped.  You can see the photos whats left of the original black paint and the runs and paint on the hose itself.

I dont know specifically about those oil cooler lines but it was common practice to blackout metal tubing like AC lines, etc that projected into grill area. It would have been assembly line. I would think it was spray or brush as the hoses were in place when done

B9 lower hose was not black on cooler end but adapter end instead & they were black-out before being installed.

Thanks guys.  This is for the 69 purple SCJ Mach 1 project car in my shop right now thats keeping me up late at night.  I will black out the ends near the oil cooler and replate the other ends to freshen them up.  If it comes out nice I will post some pictures....otherwise I will be quiet.

     Marcus I have read other posts, elsewhere, that indicate date stamps on the fittings.  Any evidence of dates or engineering ID's on the ones you have ?  Thanks,  Brian

Date stamps for sure are on the hoses I have seen.  The originals have a month and year date stamp.  I am traveling this week but can post pictures of that later this week.

I thought the top photo was my photo from photobucket, as I have the same photo and orientation.  Mine (although purchased from someone as mine were missing) look unrestored with original hoses and they were black on one end too.  I think its possible they were blacked out so they didnt show behind the grill, but cannot say for certain.

For sure the black paint on these cars was for a visual thing so you did not see them thru the grill.  Not sure about Boss B9 as Ed mentions, but for the 428 for sure.

The date codes are stamped on both crimped ends of the hose itself from what I have seen on originals.  Its a month A, B, C etc and the year 8, 9, 0 etc.  No engineering numbers.  Examples here:

    THE PROBLEM: I Would like to get some OE appearing coil wraps onto my Hoses and need some advice. 
1.  The coiled wrappings in the above/previous photos appear to be black plastic ?
2.  I have been advised that the OE coil wraps were metal (steel).  Correct ?
3.  The hoses on my car are bare rubber so I don't really know what was OE.
4.  Reproduction hose production seems to have been halted and the after market hoses are not available at this time.
5.  I have a very limited number of cars to view as a resource one is a Boss 9 that has grey colored plastic wraps.  The owner thinks OE.  So that is not much   help.
6.  So what seems to be the way to go ?  Opinions, advice or suggestions ?     Thanks,  Brian

Brian - the oil cooler hoses I have refinished here did not have plastic wrap on them at all.  None of the original hoses ever had a plastic wrap....its a steel wrap.  I am refinishing those in a black oxide type of finish to duplicate what they looked like originally.
In my opinion if you want them to look original you need to find a donor set of oil cooler hoses where you can remove the wrap and reuse.  The reproductions used a metal wrap but it wasnt exactly the same as the originals.

I will post pictures of the hoses when I am done with them in about the next week so you can see what they can look like when refinished.  Big improvement and especially on a car without power steering where you can see the hoses much better.
