Topic: '66 mustang speedometer cable at firewall

Each '66 mustang I've owned has had what appears to be a rather crude sealing material around the speedometer cable 6" or so below the firewall.  Am I correct that this at one time was around the cable where it enters the firewall and over time falls out?

Yes, it was spongy material, to help seal the hole.
