power steering belt

1966 289 power steering with no a/c. i need a motorcraft belt number for this application. i have purchased the supposed correct item from 2 vendors and they are both too short. thanks!

The book says "JC-460" which decodes to 1/2 wide and 46 inches ID (length). An incorrect pulley will change the ID.

Just checked the Osborne Engine Assembly Manual for 1966.  Page 48, Power steering drive Std and Extra cooling engine-289, Part number
C6DE-8620-A or C5AE-8620-U, both are 1/2 inch wide by 45.5 inches long. Are you sure you have the routing correct? The belt only goes over the forward crankshaft pulley and the power steering pump pulley.

I bought The same belt for my car, (power steering, no AC, 289) from Kevin Marti and it fits perfect.

one belt i purchased from marti is marked C5AE-8620-U........too short. the other is motorcraft jc460-a1............too short again. both belts appear to be same length. looks like i need one at least one inch longer. maybe 1 1/4 longer. not sure if the pulley is absolutely correct. when i cleaned it i could find no p/n's on it, just a 'ford' stamping. any more ideas are welcomed.

If you measure the diameters of your crank shaft pulley and your power steering pump pulley, I can compare the dimensions to mine. It can give us a place to start to see if the geometry is good. Maybe a centerline to centerline dimension between the pulley shafts as well.  I remember mine was a little difficult
To put on the first time, but went on without too much effort.

Maybe a centerline to centerline dimension between the pulley shafts as well.  I remember mine was a little difficult

For simplicity purposes can I recommend the following?  Pulleys can and have been changed and who knows, you may be the lucky one that this has happened to.

Put the PS pump in the middle of the travel that the bracket permits.  Using a piece of string, rope, or flexible material, measure the total length that the belt needs to be.  Be careful not to let the measuring devise fall too far into the pulley.  Keep it up against the outside of the pulleys, or at least close.  Now take that dimension to your local Auto Parts Store and have them cross reference it to a known belt.  You know it needs to be 1/2" wide to fit the pulleys.  Get 2 or 3 different ones that are close to the length needed if you need to and give them a try.  Bring back the other ones.

going to try that later today. only belts local stores stock now are those cogged style which look really dumb.

Mine had a cogged style when I bought it.  The belt was so small that the return line at the back of the pump was right up against the oil pressure sender.  And I mean TIGHT.  Only way to get the belt off was to cut it or remove the entire pump.  What a disaster!  I'm much happier now with the right belt.

Very true Jim.  That's why I recommended starting at the middle of the adjustment travel.  It gives him 1/2" or so either way to play with.

ok.......flu almost over. here's some measurements i made. crank pulley 6 3/8 diameter. p.s. pulley 5 3/4 diameter. using the rope trick i measured it out to need a 47 1/2" belt. this was taken with the pump in the middle of it's travel in the bracket. now i 'think' i need a motorcraft belt # JC 476 which should be 47 and 6/8's ................comments welcomed please.

carlite65:  I measured my ps pump pulley and it measured out at 4 13/16 of an inch in diameter, just about
An inch smaller than your pulley. Most likely the difference for the belt length. My crankshaft pulley measured
the same diameter as yours. The distance between the center of the pulley shafts measured out to about 14 5/32
of an inch. I know they this doesn't help your situation any but thought you might like to have the info.
