1966 6 cylinder coupe spindles
« on: January 16, 2013, 09:53:04 PM »
Does anyone reproduce spindles for a 1966 Mustang?  Can't find them in the catalogs...

Thanks

Should be easy to find used.  Any particular reason you'd want repros?

I might have a used pair if you're interested.

Not really. Can probably clean mine up and re-use.  Just going back new with most of the front end and couldn't find them....Anyway to really tell if mine are not worn?

As long as the spindle surfaces where the bearings ride have no marring or gouges, should be fine.

Try not to get into replacing parts with new from a catalog.  You'll only end up with fit/function issues later.  Restoring as many original parts will make for a much more authentic restoration.

I have taken the spindles off of my Mustang, cleaned them and have noticed that the part numbers are C60A-3108F and C60A-3107F.  Everything I can find says these are 1966 Fairlane and 1967 Mustang spindles.  Any confirmation of this information?

The spindles with the Fairlane part numbers means that the Fairlane engineering group designed them, Mustangs just used them. This is common with Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars and trucks. One engineering group designs the item for a product line and other product lines use them - without change. Don't let it bother you.

Do you have 4 or 5 lug hubs?

You say you have a  66 6 cyl so C6OA spindles doesn't sound right.

The 4 lug spindle is the same one first used on the 63 Falcon 6 cyl
and then was used on the Mustang 64-66 6 cyl, V8 used a different one.

C6OA would have been originally designed for a 66 Fairlane which
used a heavier duty suspension compared to 64-66 Mustang 6 cyl
suspension. Can you post some pictures?

I have my suspension completely apart and unfortunately, I left the spindles at my shop.  I do have the upper and lower arms here at the house if pictures of those will help.  I am also attaching a picture of my springs that have pink markings on them.  A little background, when i bought this car, it was not driveable so I put it on a trailer and brought it home.  The first thing I noticed when pushing it in the driveway was that the right tire would "drag" at times when rolling.  I have been suspicious of the front end since then.  I started this thread because I wanted to make sure nothing was bent and thought it would be easiest to just buy a new set of spindles.  Now it seems I may be getting to the bottom of why the tire would "drag" at times.

Jim is absolutely correct in regards to how engineering numbers were assigned to parts.  There are many examples of part numbers that might appear to be specific to other car lines showing up on Mustangs and vice versa.

6 and 8 spindles are not interchangeable for 65-66 and replacing spindles on cars is not typical, unless they are severely damaged from an accident or maybe the shafts are worn out.  If the wheel was dragging, it most likely was from the brakes being froze up or very worn bearings.

I think maybe whats happened is that someone has put on a set of spindles/brake assys from a 67 6 cyl
and they may have even used the 67 steering linkage as well. The 67 spindles have a different geometry
than the 66 and the steering linkage is also longer on the 67 than the 66 is, that can certainly give you
the problem of a tire dragging or scuffing from the incorrect alignment, actually had the same problem with
mine when I first got it.
If you could take pictures of your steering linkage to see what you have that would help.
If you want to leave me a pm I can leave you my e-mail to send the pics and I can send you pics of the correct parts.

The original 65/66 spindles were light duty and would break at times.
When I worked in a gas station in the 70's I remember a 65/66 Mustang
6 cyl that was towed in because the wheel came off, the spindle had
broken off, we had to replace it.

Thanks for the helpful post.  I have already replaced the steering linkage but I can tell you the linkage that I ordered was for a 66 6 cylinder with manual steering and is the exact match of what came off of the car.  The only problem I encountered with the new parts was the outer (I think) tie rod ends were not reverse thread...
