Are 67 and 68 firewall pads the same?

How many firewall pad retainers are there?

Don't recall but don't know of a difference - possible someone else will speak up. The are differences depending on if the car had AC and where the car was assembled

Difference between retainers 67 and 68 and the texture of the pad between San Jose and the other plants but that is all I can think of.Bob

Are the repro Firewall Pad's any good?  It sounds like your looking for a good doner car to steal one from.  It sounds like it could be hard to find a good original.  Mine was ripped and I don't think these things are repairable.

As always IMHO its great if you can find and use an nice original one (sure puts a smile on a judges face) but lacking that, what some are doing (and what I did) for a non San Jose style dash pad is to purchase a repo and apply some sound deaedner/undercoating spray to get the texture. I "rained" down the spray from about three feet above, attempting to get it to hit with a splatter/globby look

I might have found a nice original. That sounds like a good idea though.

The 67-68 reproduction firewall pads are crap! Nothing on the repro pad is close to the original...materials, texture, thickness, shape, pre-punched openings and lame fasteners. It will take considerable time to fit and get components (like the fuse box, pedal washer) to fit. IMO, use one if you are desparate!

I see NPD has two styles.  A cheaper version and a 'molded' version.  Do you know which type you got?  Or are they all bad.  I am going to dig out my old one and see if it cant be repaired with undercoating.  Doesn't hurt to try I guess.

Even the "concours" ones for $140 are worthless from what I have been told.

The expensive ones are just that, expensive. They still look and fit lousy. I have a mint SJ pad I'd happily trade for a NJ pad of equal condition

Texture

Dearborn and NJ pad had a surface that was a splattered one

San Jose had evenly spaced raised dots in nice rows

I dug out my 67 original but could only locate two holes for retainers.  THe problem is i am missing the entire part to the left of the steering wheel where from looking at some pictures i think there were two.  They were the metal sawtooth verity.

At least 3 with out looking on the retainers for the pad. The saw tooth retainer had a 65 and up to mid 66 variety and a mid 66 through 67 slightly different saw tooth style variety. Hard to tell the difference unless they are side by side . Very small difference. The good news is I saw where Dearborn classic sells the saw tooth variety but under a Galaxie application.  It was junk yard only part until now. Bob
