Dashboard colour and finish
« on: January 25, 2010, 06:22:49 PM »
Hi I need to touch up some areas on my dashboard - 1965 Rangoon red exterior with a red standard interior.
Is the dashbord the same colour as the body ? if not does anyone know a Dupont or PPG code for it ?
What is the correct finish - Satin , semi matt, or matt ?
Thank you

No the color of the dash (metal portion) is not the same as the exterior

The finish was commonly referred to as egg shell

Not sure if the original/old codes will do you any good with all the new products and reformulations but here it is

Jeff thanks
I searched for this info before and could not come up with a code.
Armed with the code you gave me I contacted PPG and a very nice lady told me there is not a modern formulation to make that colour.
However she gave me 72246 which she said was the next best thing.
Anyone used 72246 for their red interior? or what do you use?
Thanks

Another option many are using is the Color Library in San Diego

Be aware - that they are not cheap but then again it seems that no paint products are "cheap" any longer......... oh the good old days ;)

I am still struggling to get some interior paint, however I now have a full paint formula from PPG for their closest match, so will try that.
Another question, Is the trunk painted in interior colour ? if so what about the inside of the lid.
Should the inside of the rear fenders where the sound deadener is be interior colour? as mine are black.
Is the inside of the hood interior colour?
I saw on a post here about the interior/ exterior cut off line on the doors, if the hood and trunk lids are interior colour could anyone illustrate the cut off lines on those?
Thanks for the help on getting this right

Under hood and inside of trunk are exterior color. I believe all wheels wells would have some exterior color overspray on top of the black you see.

Errrrrr - nope ;)

The finish of the wheel wells differ depending on year and what plant - but exterior paint over black is not typical anywhere I've seen

As Sparky mentioned no the trunk area and the hood area are exterior color

The interior was originally painted before the exterior color was applied (they simply masked off those areas for the exterior application. On your year car the dash, A pillars and the interior surface of the doors were the only part that was interior color.  Well except quarter panel covers and such

As far as wheelwells and such - We're getting way off thread/topic - a suggestion- why  not start a new thread in either 65-66 or in the Body and Paint section  and we can discuss all the details.

Remember to include when and where your car was built ;)

Have you tried taking the car to the place you buy your paint.  They should be able to use their special tool to match the paint.  You will still probably have to repaint the complete panel.  Also it will have a formula and you can compare it to the formula for the 72246.

The car is not able to travel as I am working on mechanicals, and paint suppllier is not local. Also I am not sure that the interior paint on the car is correct, so have nothing to match.
Thanks for the suggestion.
I will do as suggested and start over in bodywork, I was hoping this would be a quick , easy topic but it is getting complicated.
