67 Shelby Opened Hood Rod Support
« on: December 26, 2012, 12:32:46 AM »
Did any 67 Shelby's use the swing up rod to support the hood when raised? I read or heard somewhere these were used for a short time. Did 1966 cars use them? I am wondering if they were a carried over into '67.

There are a few reported 67 prop rod hoods. Very few. It was not a good solution. The 67 with the steel innerstructure used the standard Mustang spring (hoods were heavy with steel inner structure) . The smaller diameter light springs would not hold a steel innerstructure hood up. With the steel innerstructure the hoods didn't warp with the tension of the heavy standard Mustang springs like they would on a all fiberglass hood. The steel innerstructure hood was more labor intensive and more costly because of that and added materials . That was the main reason it was phased out.The later all fiberglass hoods used the light springs.

Thanks Bob. I found one prop rod described as a 1965, 350 part. I looked at a few images of 65's with no rod in sight. Might this rod be for 67's because of the hefty early steel hood frames? If I were to put a prop rod on my car would I have to locate the correct hinges for this set up? Lastly, is what I'm trying to accomplish be considered correct for my car? Maybe I'm going too far!
Thanks!

Don't recall a hole(s) ion your radiator support plus other cars in your group don't have the feature. Think your getting distracted ;)

I would not add prop rod if it were my car.
