68 8K Tach. Question (S code car)
« on: December 06, 2012, 03:18:38 PM »
I have a 68 S code 390 GT Fastback, Late Metuchen built car ( built 7-18-68). It's a factory 4 speed car so it has a tach as standard equipment.  I thought all 390 cars got an 8K tach standard and all small block cars got a 6 K tach. I mentioned this on another forum and a very respected member advised me that my car should have a 6K tach as standard, and the 8K tach was a separate option and would be called out on the Marti Report. Im almost 100% certain that the car was built with the 8K tach ( it's an unmolested 70K car that really was stashed in a barn since 1973 after an accident). There's no mention on my marti report of an optional 8K Tach  (in fact I've never seen a marti report with a 8K upgrade called out as an option). I've parted out two other 68 390 cars that had 8K tach's in the past, (I bought them both for the Tach clusters and associated harness) which is probably why I assumed the 8K tach was correct for my car.

Now I'm curious if my car is a fluke, or if it's an early/late thing, a NJ thing, or what.  Any opinions ??

This car also has a 55 amp alternator documented on the build sheet, which is also kinda scarce.

Here's a shot of my marti report.....

This San Jose GT 390 car has a 8000 rpm tac and it is not mentioned on the Marti.   Brian

I think that most 67 S codes had the 6K tachs because they were not high revving but it seems as production went on Ford chose to just put the 8K in all models. It seems odd that a car with 7-18-68 would still have a 6k tach. We have a 68 S code built 12-15-67 that has the 6K tach. The Marti report did not specify 6K or 8K.

Never have all the pictures you want or need and taking interior pictures normally take a back seat to undercarriage and interior shots it seems :(

But looking at the pictures I have of cars and their gauges (think we looked into this for 67 or 68 one before) it appears that there is no real strong pattern except for 428 CJ cars that did get the tach. Only found those with 9 grand tachs. Interesting to see how many choose not to have tachs in those cars - guessing they got aftermarket ones shortly after delivery. Didn't throw in all the 68 Shelby examples I have - figured they might have been coded different and it might alter the survey incorrectly

Looked at all three plants (on 68) but here is just the few NJ ones I have to offer

8T02S1187xx - 6K
8T02S1339xx - 8K
8T03S1704xx - 6K
8T02S204xxx - 8K

Both other plants

8F03S123253 - 8K
8F01R181616- 8K

8R01S114578 - 6K
8R02S133811 - 8K
8R02S160611 - 8K

Hope this helps a little
