64 1/2 interior paint color
« on: November 23, 2012, 11:53:54 PM »
I'm looking to repaint the interior of my June 64 mustang. The trim code is 86, with a Group 1 interior paint color of Charcoal Black Irid, listed as R/M #4464.

Does anyone know what paint color this translates into today? What is typically used for the correct interior paint color for trim 86 for the 64 1/2s?

Thanks.

The Ditzler/PPG code is 9295.  You can order PPG products online at TCP Global if your local jobber has trouble finding it.

Charcoal/metallic black was not used until '67.

Here's the reference I was using for the 64 1/2 interior paint color. The first one shows the trim for code 86, Black standard vinyl. The second shows what color specific interior components are supposed to be for a trim code of 86, listed as Group 1 or Group 2. It shows the interior color for 64 1/2 Group 1 (dash, windshield post, metal door trim) to be a "Charcoal Black Irid". I did not have a Group 1/Group 2 chart for 64 1/2, this one says 65/66.

Is the Charcoal Black Irid color the correct interior paint color for an 86 trim code?

Thanks.

Unfortunately, there are multiple errors in the work you cited. The correct color is listed as simply "Black" with the PPG number that I gave earlier.
Given the many mistakes in the book, I would also guard against using it to determine which  parts were painted a particular color.  As you note, the chart lists only 65/66. And while 64-1/2 Mustangs might be considered 65's by virtue of their VIN, the fact remains that there was a definite transition in interior trim at the beginning of the 1965 model year in August. As much as possible, I would use original vehicles with this color as reference material, until a correct accounting can be made.

Don't be too hasty in throwing the baby out with the bath water. That book ("How To Restore Your Mustang") that some incorrect information came from, has many other "correct" entries. If and when you determine some entry is in fact in error, correct the error. This is not public school where books are passed on to the next class of students, they are yours. So fix the entry with a pencil (so you can correct your correction later).
My correction on the appropriate page (6-10) shows that 64-66 R/M paint code "may" be 946, satin black. Sorry, I don't have the source of my correction.

True, but you have to know what's incorrect before you assume it as fact.  ;)
Correcting something in a book is easier than correcting the wrong color paint after you've sprayed your car.

Here's another reference I found, Ditzler paint reference for 1964 Fords, exterior and interior color codes. The interior color reference says the Ditzler color code for 64 Mustang with Black interior color is 9295. So if that's right, and it looks correct, what finish is this?

Thanks for the help.

For the 86 interior trim code, the vinyl trim below the door sill for the 64 1/2 should be black to match the carpet, correct? My interior now is a 46 (white with black appointments, from previous owner). If I wanted to add the vinyl w/o changing out the whole interior, what color should the vinyl be, white to match the doors and seats or black to match the carpet that it will be up against?
