1967 Ribbed tail panel
« on: October 31, 2012, 04:28:31 PM »
Greetings all,

I am starting the resto on my 67 Indy Pacesetter and I have a question on the ribbed tail panel - Has anyone here used the aluminum repop and how does it compare to the original?

One of my tail panels is good, but the other has most of the studs snapped off.

Thanks,
Fran

Have not used any of the repos but did want to ask if your car had the single of double digit paint code on the door tag?

The older reproductions I have seen had way too much texture between the fins.  I would be looking for a nice set of originals if I were you.  Don't rule out panels with a couple broken studs, those can be epoxied if the broken off piece is included.

The reproduction panels are nothing like the originals.

The originals are pot metal and smooth cast (no grain whatsoever). Also each rib is a double rib.  The four mounting studs that are towards the center are studs casted as part of the panel, used a rectangular rubber wedge, and a stamped quick nut with a wide flange built in.

The reproductions are aluminum and rough cast (look like sand casted). The ribs are single. The four mounting studs have threaded inserts, use an round aluminum wedge, and a captured washer nut.

As Jeff was inquiring, if your door tag paint code is a 2 digit code, then the panel (and other rear parts) were painted a metallic gray.

Do as Charles suggests, find good used ones!

The tail panels are painted Wimbledon White as original, but they should - and will have - 3M, blue, reflective tape between each rib.  The stripes on the sides are also 3M reflective tape.

Here are a couple of ads and a picture of my car when new...

Never heard of the reflective tape or seen it on an original panel or car.  Where did you find the documentation on the taillight reflective strips?

Thanks for sharing

Looks like it was part of the Pacesetter package.

Looks like it was part of the Pacesetter package.

Saw the reference about the reflective stripe (interesting that were dealing with Scotchlight at that point) but saw no reference to the taillight panel detail

I agree Jeff, that there is no reference to the reflective tape on the taillight panel, but look at the ad.  The first picture the stripes and taillight panel are dark...in the second picture both are "illuninated".  The vintage picture is pretty convincing too!

Hi To Toejamm,
If you still have the original with damaged studs, why not just drill out the broken studs and replace them.If the metal base has broken away,it can be welded-or use JB cold epoxy...sounds like you have some flexibility due to the paint and reflective tape.If you can post pictures we may be able to see about repairing----always try to preserve the original whenever possible.
