8" Pinion Snubber Shield?
« on: August 30, 2012, 02:26:23 AM »
Good Evening,
I was looking a friends '65 GT Coupe. On the underside of the car at the welded in snubber plate, there is a rubber bumper bolted in with a metal angled shield in the front. However my march-April of '65 San Jose GT fastback it does not have the metal piece in front of the rubber snubber. Why the difference?
Thanks!

Hard to visualize without a pic.  Is there a piece of metal that runs the full length of the rubber to the angled tip?

In continuing the discussion... it looks original to me.  I assume this is an A code GT car?  Since A code 65-66 GT's share the same rear build up as a K code, the snubber plates are the same.  Maybe this reinforcement was a way to strengthen the bumper area.  K codes typically do not have a bumper attached there, but 8" rear cars do.

Good question.  My 65 San Jose GT fastback April-May build car has the metal piece.  Brian

Hmmm... Well my friends GT has it, but mine is missing. I wonder if anyone has an extra metal shield for the rubber bumper?
Thank you everyone! Interesting to note.

Charles,
It is an A code San Jose fastback with the correct welded in nine inch metal snubber plate and a rubber snubber, but no metal guard.
Thanks!

If you find a consistent pattern during a certain time period, then would make sense to duplicate the detail.  Could have been one of those hit-n-miss sort of things that maybe got phased out quickly.

Thanks Charles!
Maybe my car is not such a basket case after all! Joking! Just one of the many things that make me wonder. I really appreciate everyone's input!

I crawled under my May 11, San Jose, 65 GT Fastback and couldn't see the entire snubber, but I did see an additional piece of metal which I assume to be the bracket.

Think we need to have some additional info with the picture since it does not represent all 8" snubber styles in total (snubber bracket/plate and bumper) .  Would agree that the bumper is what is expected and typical for non- K code application for 65-66

Just don't want someone to be changing things without the full "picture" ;)

I was under my car the other day changing to fuel sender float and remembered this post,no pic but my snubber is the same (well almost) with the angled piece of metal. Turns out my rubber has left the premises some time in the last 15 yrs since I was under there last.
